Do away with roadside parking - ST Forum

 

TRANSPORT Minister Raymond Lim, in his reply to questions in Parliament, said that Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges were raised recently after traffic speeds on the relevant roads fell below the optimal range ('Why ERP rates go up'; Straitstimes.com, Nov 22).

 

The Ministry of Transport should consider removing street-side parking to improve traffic flow. More carparks should be built progressively to replace roadside parking.

 

No roadside parking is allowed in many major cities around the world. We should look at having more underground parking lots and using space below viaducts for parking.

 

For a start, I urge the Land Transport Authority and Urban Redevelopment Authority to set a target to remove roadside parking in at least 50 per cent of our roads in stages.
