  1. 1. Which type of Road Hoggers do you encounter most in SG?

    • Blur Porcine: Those that just keep to the same speed in 1st lane with absolute detachment from the surrounding traffic condition
      48
    • Tapping Porcine: Those who keep tapping brake despite you keeping a safe distance
      10
    • Ego Porcine: Those who hog in 1st lane and attempts to block you when you are forced to overtake from the left
      7
    • What road hoggers? Never seen them!

I usually don't care about this species of road users unless there is no way I can overtake them due to traffic condition and their primitive instinct to hog.

Personally, I encounter (3)Ego Porcine most frequently.

This particular sub-species is one of the kind.

They differ from the other 2 sub-species by their overly developed ego that is much much larger than their re-known pea-sized brain.

They also have a very acute awareness of the surrounding (very much the direct opposite of Blur Porcine). When they detect from their review mirror that you are signaling left and starting to sieve out to overtake, they will speed up in attempt to block your overtaking attempt.

The only way to subdue this sub-species is:

1) to time your overtaking maneuver so that you have adequate space to accelerate in the 2nd lane. You will need to factor in it's accelerative prowess based on your knowledge of the particular make/model of vehicle it is operating.

2) your vehicle must be more powerful than it's vehicle. Due to the different power/weight ratio of various vehicles, it is not practical to base it on absolute HP/torque figure. A personal guideline I shall share will be that your vehicle must have at least 1-2secs faster in 0-100kph timing. Please also take into account aftermarket modifications which can adversely affect the outcome of the encounter.

In general:

- stickers: the more stickers they have, the less substance in the engine bay.

- brand-name stickers: usually just a wish list of mods they are saving up for.

- LEDs: see stickers

- Blow off valve sound: depends on vehicle, not all are real

- Exos: see blow off valve.

Main weakness in this sub-species is the fact that the size of the ego is inversely proportional to the vehicle prowess it is operating. So exploit that. [;)]

Special caution: be prepared to have horns blaring and high beam flashing in your rear view mirror once you are successful in subduing this creature as it is their only way to soothe their bruised ego.

****for those who chose (4)...please do not comment in this thread you bloody hogger!!!****

Road hogger are universal. You find them in virtually any countries. Nothing unique about them

Its tailgaters that are more unique, uniquely Singapore. I hardly see tailgaters in the countries I visit. Even China, notorious for the way they drive, I hardly see any tailgaters.

We have one of the shortest daily travel mileage in the world (end to end is like 60km?), but ironically, also one of the most impatient drivers in the world.

tailgaters are about the same level of intelligence or worse than hoggers because they do not seem to be able to comprehend that in event of backside kissing, they are by default liable to claims.

I don't care about tailgaters. They kiss, they pay. [rolleyes]

In countries i visited and driven on the roads: Aus, US, MY. In their cities, it's bumper to bumper traffic...so there are no hoggers/tailgaters to talk about.

But their highways are really highways...The car to car distance and spacing is good....and usually those who chose to drive slower automatically goes to the slow lane.... that is the same culture as standing to the left on escalators which we sorely lack as well.

..not like our expressways when they are slow-ways most of the time.... and it is made worse with hoggers clogging it up.

I believe there are always people who are bias/prejudiced about the subject, as well as with different interpretations.

Example: Along a 3-lanes Expressway, heavy vehicles speed limited to 70km/h, so travelling along Lane 3. Lane 1 and 2 are free for others to travel along up to 90km/h. Motorist 'A' using Lane 2 who maintain 70km/h (road hogging in my opinion) will be forcing others travelling above 70km/h to ovetake by using Lane 1. Should this overtaking motorist 'B' overtakes 'A' with about 80km/h in Lane 1, (another road hogger is born). Third motorist 'C' travelling above 80km/h is unable to overtake 'A' or 'B'. Among reasons for our daily traffic jams although all three motorists are within the speed limits.

I do not advocate to drive above the speed limit, or with turbo-charged engine as solution.

Did I chose/keyed 5 for the vote count?

You got the point. You are right. Not that many can adapt to the tight driving space here. Especially with some not so co-operative motorists around (mostly FT motorcyclists)

The content of your literatures like tailgaters' confession? So far so good, most of the time people around me stand to the left when I am using the elevators (here and oversea). I am of averagel built and some ladies said handsome-looking only (laugh)

From your example, Motorist B should have gone back to 2nd lane after overtaking at 80kph (provided he made sure that there was no car approaching the 1st lane at speed higher than 80kph which will result in him causing the approaching car to slow down). 1st lane is for overtaking.

If Motorist B is unable to sieve back to the 2nd lane due to other cars in front of Motorist A, that will only mean:

- Motorist A is not hogging in the first place because he is just travelling behind a column of cars travelling at 70kph.

- Motorist B is a lousy driver at not being able to analyze and judge the traffic condition before the overtaking manouvre.

- If Motorist B already know that he is unable to sieve back to lane 2 after over taking at 80kph, he should have stayed in 2nd lane instead of clogging up the over taking lane at 80kph....

When I was in Japan, every single one stand to the left of escalators.

When I was in USA/Aus, most of them stand to the left.

When I was in Taiwan/HK, 50% stand to the left

When I was in Malaysia/thailand/Indo, <50% stand to the left

When I am in Singapore........20% or less

And once again... what has looks got to do with standing to the left on escalator? [rolleyes]

Not really substantiated unless you been to all international car forums.

Even if it is true.... the contributing factor would be that we have a distorted proportion of drivers here who road hogs.

As a matter of fact, I don't think we have many road hogger than other country. Maybe more that insist on lane one. But Tail gaters & lanes "zipper" must be at least top 10 in the world.

road hoggers vs tailgaters......MCF's fav topic of all times!! [laugh]

Actually if you insist...... it's basically chicken or egg thing.....

Without someone in front to tailgate.....how can a tailgater exist? He will most likely be called a speedster at most.

Without someone at the back to tailgate..... a road hogger can still exist because the other cars behind can choose not to tailgate, keep a distance or overtake.

Agree, I tend to meet more road hoggers in HK than Singapore. Very common to see people doing 80km/h on right-most lane on highways with 100km/h speed limit when the middle lane is clear. The reason why they get to hog so long is because most people bide their time and overtake on the left when possible rather than tailgate them aggressively.
