[gossip] New Proton Inspira: The Malaysian Lancer Officially Launched!

Proton has officially unveiled its Mitsubishi Lancer-derived Inspira mid-sizer, after its soft launch to the public and media in late October. Since then Proton has received over 1,800 bookings from customers around Malaysia in anticipation of its market launch this month.

The new model is the result of an OEM collaboration (the word "rebadge" sounds nastier...) between PROTON and Mitsubishi Japan, the latter providing the mechanical and design basis and the former tweaking the model for the Malaysian market.

Among those changes are the signature Proton grille and -according to the Malaysian company- the incorporation of Lotus DNA in the Inspira's ride and handling.

Dato' Sri Mohd. Nadzmi Mohd, the Chairman of Proton parent corporation Proton Holdings Berhad, explains:

"PROTON is ready to move even further ahead to become a recognised player in the global automotive industry. We have been working and collaborating with Mitsubishi for the last 25 years and its a natural step forward for us to continue to work with them in this project. One of our product strategy is to introduce non-core models through strategic collaborations which provides a more efficient, timely, and cost effective product to the market. The Proton Inspira is an excellent example of this strategic collaboration."

Proton Holdings Berhad's Managing Director Dato' Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir is equally enamoured with the new model:

"The enormous level of interest shown since we first announced the introduction of the new model is certainly a big sign of approval from car buyers. PROTON would like to thank all those who have placed a booking for the Inspira and believe me, they will not be disappointed with the new generation of Proton cars coming their way."The Inspira uses Mitsubishi's existing 1.8 and 2.0 Liter MIVEC engines, the latter of which is only available with the CVT transmission. Scroll down for the image gallery that includes pictures from the official brochure and a video from the presentation.

Proton really CMI from making nice looking cars like Satria Neo they hacked back to caveman ways of rebadging lancers lol! They should really have sold their stake to VW when they wanted them!

Oh dear! Buyers of this "new" Proton can simply change the front bumper back to the mitsubishi one (exact fit I presume), rebadge with Mitsi logo and no one will be the wiser!

If they do this, it will be a strange category decision by Mit

The Lancer EX is supposed to a replacement for Galant (In Japan, the EX is still known as Galant) and superior to the Lancer GLS. But the

size of the EX is not very much larger than the GLS.

And now a EX hatch, which is smaller than the GLS ? Will it be priced higher than the GLS even if it is a 1.5L ? And how does this EX hatch going to compare to the Colt/Colt Plus ?

What happen to the days of Colt -> Lancer -> Galant/Magna ? The size of these 3 models was a telltale sign of the price/category which it belonged back then.

Today, confusing.

i think our local mitsubishi is bringing in the lancer EX hatchback next yr.

change in business focus?

The protons are 1.8 & 2 litres variants last I check, so why re-badge to the lancer ex which are mostly 1.5l.

Most of our local ex (except the 2.0l GT) wouldn't be able to even beat the Malaysian's Inspire even in stock form, & we know many of them (Malaysians) mod their cars.

I can feel for our brothers & sister driving the Ex, especially those that drive across the bridges often.

Well the price will surely double once the reach our sunny isle... I reckon it will cost ard the $70k region for the 1.8 inspira and $80k region for the 2.0

If the car comes with enhanced suspension setup from lotus i tink surely worth buying and better if ESP comes standard? Dat would defitnitely be a gd deal!

Oh really? Didn't know they'd be quite so large in capacity. With the claimed "lotus" influence, it should be quite a force to reckon with eh?
