Benarsenal Turbocharged November 15, 2010 Share November 15, 2010 I think it's all boiling. Last time people guai guai follow. Good also follow, bad also follow. Now they see that things aren't going so well (or not as they want), then they question. Question no answer, they havoc. Whether that is a good or bad thing, is up for debate. Viceroymenthol 6th Gear November 15, 2010 Share November 15, 2010 Hi All, just thinking,is it the fault of our education system that create so called ah bengs? previously in the 80s and 90s,teacher has the right to cane and impose punishment to students. I remember the days when there are public canings in front of the school assembly. Now the schools imposed the so called " LOVE" teaching. No more becoming scolding the students No more public caning No more standing outside the door Thus students becoming more arrogant, disregarding of discipline and law. So sad So education system is the cause huh? You rather ah bengs or robots? Actually if I were the govt, i would prefer robots.
Sosaria Twincharged November 15, 2010 Share November 15, 2010 At the end of school life,no matter what grades, there must always be room for everyone. Which i find lacking in Singapore.Rather we are trying to do away with this group of acadamically not so successful people.Just look at the amount of FT grads we're bringing in. Like we care nothing for our own lagging people.Which is very sad to me. I think there must be a mindset change in society to accept skills training as equal value to academic training. Many of the failures in school who run into disciplinary problems and gang problems are not interested in academic route. Cannot sit still in classroom, in fact. Some could be due to undiagnosed problems like attention deficit, or dyslexia. In that case, why force them to remain in academic route?? There should be a way to channel these students to some skills training, right after primary education. Learn a skill, say for 3 years, then by age 16 - go out and work to earn a living. Keep them busy and useful to society, and they won't have time to cause trouble. At the same time, these kids earn a salary and gain self-respect. And teachers will also heave a collective sigh of relief. Skills training is also "all action" and will not be so boring to these kids who are not suited for the usual classroom lessons. I think this solution is better for them - rather than keep them in normal schooling for too long, way past their interest level. But problem is: can society accept this? Many parents will no doubt view skills or vocational training as somewhat "low class" - so some mindset change is needed.
Red_bean_bun Clutched November 15, 2010 Share November 15, 2010 Those that got canings when young grew up and worked in MOE and collaborated to come up with love teaching. Marquee Clutched November 15, 2010 Share November 15, 2010 (edited) Schools do not produce ah bengs or gangster. Family does. Parenting is never easy especially in SG when we are given one of the best environment to raise our kids; almost everything are given to kids. Kids, on the other hand, have very little motivation to perform or to do things which they like. Those lack proper guideance and self discipline end up in finding their own comfort and challenges with gangs; seeking for a status and identity. This is a strong contrast from a poorer nation; where in general, kids are motivated to get out from poverty. Secondly, most parents grew up with a system of studying and passing exam. We were not taught how to raise kids and majority just adopt what we experienced with our parent. So we can see all sort of parents now telling what the school should be doing without reflecting on themselve and reviewing their time with their own children. Just as naturing successful person, gangster cannot be produced overnight. Parents who worried their children becoming gangster should spend more time communication with them. There are signs that can identify at early stage. Edited November 15, 2010 by Marquee
Nicz Clutched November 15, 2010 Share November 15, 2010 (edited) Most bengs are spawned from the influence of existing the bengs. If the school has a tendency to have more than a couple of beng students, chances are a larger number of the students studying there are plain rowdy. I don't think its the education system. The best cure for 'beng-ness' is time. When they reach a certain age, they're likely to reflect back and find their past actions undesirable. I doubt they're many 40-50 year old bengs around.
