That sound during reversing

i think some of you guys experience this before.

You're reversing into a perpendicular parking lot (R gear) with steering wheel turned, and if u engage the D gear to move forward, and R gear again to reverse to adjust the parking, there will be this spring-like knocking sound.

any idea wat's that sound and whether it's damaging the gears etc?

Maybe freeplay in the tranmission or suspension....

Think your car was still moving when u changed gears. If your car is totally still u won't hear it.

i make sure is completely stopped before changing the gears eh. thats why its kinda weird

if you are RWD, chances is that the axle bearing is dead.

not expensive to repair

if you are FWD, most probably is the gearbox

if it's FWD, wats with the gearbox? is it gonna damage the gearbox? or is it the nature of it

Neutral Newbie

Should be the suspension spring sound as it's shifting weight from 1 side of the car to another side when you reverse, most FF (Front Engine,FWD) drive cars have this sound in this kind of senario only depends on whether u can hear it thru the insulation.

sorry late reply

i was not looking out for a response

anyway, usually if it is gearbox spoilt, its due to the valves are blown or the clutch

not too expensive to replace

but the labor to take the box out and rebuild it , that is the pain in the "S" , which therefore translate into a higher repair bill

if your car is not a exotic model, see if you can get hold of a rebuilt gearbox and do a swap with the workshop.

should be able to save you a couple of pennies
