Passion 5th Gear November 9, 2010 Share November 9, 2010 Errr.... I don't really agree on the diesel tax part. Thats because the amt consumers pay for diesel is considerably higher than those cabs (they do pay diesel tax of I think $5K a year). The cabbies are paying a lower price for the diesel (last heard from a driver around 80C) compared to $1.3 for regular diesl price. This means we are already paying a tax. Putting special tax on diesel cars is like double taxing. Regarding biodiesel, I did read about it on papers but I have yet to see a petrol station putting up sign that says biodiesel. Its extremely scarce just like CNG.... Have is like don't have.... I think they call it subsidy, not tax.Don't send the wrong info.Anyway, cab road tax not 5k,the toyota crown if I didn't remember wrongly, it's 2.7k?Sonata taxi lower as it's only 2L turbocharge.Turbo is not taxable. inlinesix Hypersonic November 9, 2010 Share November 9, 2010 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N57 Take a look at the latest BMW diesel engine esp. the twin turbo engine. Its HP is 302HP with a whopping 600Nm of torque!! By contrast, BMW's N54B30 (a 3L turbo engine) produces ~330HP and 450Nm torque. Can fight even evos and WRX easily (stock for stock of course). But the 600Nm toruqe allows the diesel car to pull ahead long before the WRX or Evo's turbo kicks in.... 600NM is generated from twin turbo diesel. During the era of BMW E39, 530d produces 410NM. Coupecabriolet Clutched November 9, 2010 Share November 9, 2010 Most of the taxis on our road are fitted with turbo diesel engines... Skoda, Sonata, Merc.. just to name some. If the taxi drivers are "hiong" enough, they are able to escape from the Orange-Striped WRX on the expressways! huh are you sure? WRX from TP cannot keep up with these Merc sonata cabs? they only good at straightline.. also not very fast. i lose them easily on the bends.
W210k 1st Gear November 9, 2010 Share November 9, 2010 Its got nothing to do with higher torque, or better mileage, that can be derived from turbo-diesel engines, vis-a-vis gasoline engines. Nor has it got to do with the perceived 'slower' implementation of Euro4/5 diesel in Singapore, which by the way, is tied mainly to sulfur levels (50 wppmS and 10 wppmS respectively) of automative diesel fuel (ADO) more than anything else. The NEA's stand is mainly against PM (particulate matter). The bane of areas like USWC (US West Coast), giving rise to smog, or in Bangkok's and Jarkarta's perpetual haze. PM is also the root cause of many a lung cancer case world wide. PM filters are in short, dysfunctional ... and their efficiency degrades quickly, after a while. VW/Audi, Mercedes Benz et al had performed a song and dance on the 'wonders' of turbo-diesel engines, many a time to the NEA, but we, Singapore, remain unimpressed. Period. I for one, fully support the SG government and NEA is taking a questionable position in reducing diesel tax and thus allow the proliferation of diesel-engined cars in Singapore. The North Americans (USA and Canada) are of the same opininion on this subject matter - thus the majority of vehicles (the largest vehicular population in the world) there remain gasoline powered. Its just the penny-pinching EU countries and automobile manufacturers that are more flustered by fuel economics, so much so that they are siphoning a huge amount of the world's automative diesel production into Europe. God bless the European community for the next few decades, re carcinogenic implications, on their lives and their childrens' / future generations. inlinesix Hypersonic November 9, 2010 Share November 9, 2010 Our air quality is dependant on our neighbouring countries. Juz like haze is easily blown into our island once wind direction change. In addition, there are thousands of heavy vehicle from Malaysia enters our island. Does it really make a big difference whether diesel is allowed or not? W210k 1st Gear November 9, 2010 Share November 9, 2010 (edited) Our air quality is dependant on our neighbouring countries. Juz like haze is easily blown into our island once wind direction change. In addition, there are thousands of heavy vehicle from Malaysia enters our island. Does it really make a big difference whether diesel is allowed or not? But why even add to the diesel problem, if we can help it? Anyways, prevailing winds are NE and SW (depending on the time of the year) ... meaning, West Malaysian air will never come down south-easterly to Singapore. We get mainly air from the South China Sea (Jan-Jun, North-East Monsoon, open sea), or from Sumatra (Jul-Dec, South-West Monsoon, too bad now with forest fires). Refer to atlas.
