My power steering leaking?

guess depends on how much the car means to the owner... for me drive shaft i feel like getting both new ones...but after some thinking i guess recon ones enuf... 6months warranty and new dust covers...

as for my power steering, i have checked the leak is from a bolt... very slight leak so much so that my power steering fluid is still almost max... i hear no sound and no loss in power for the steering rack... so i will just top up the fluid and monitor next oil change if the leak has gotten worse... another way is to put news paper under my car at night... next morning can check how serious the leak.... but my leak is not serious enuf to 'drip' yet...

Try changing it to a Syn ATF for your power steering, normally these type of ATF will have seal conditioning properties, might slow or even stop your steering leak. RL D4 would be a good choice.

Easy to DIY too, just salvage this type of pump from your used shampoo bottle and pump out all your PSF. Do it 2-3 time and your fluid will be almost 100% new.

Fr 2nd hand driveshaft, u better check how ty recon. Some places just grind n smoothen e 'crown' to stop e tak tak sound but it comes back soon after. If ty change a new CV joint with oem parts n properly done them maybe worth. If ty just grind, dont waste yr $.Get a new oem pair or just 1 side better.

Yr ps bolt did u check if its tight? If it is, maybe it just needs a new washer or rubber gasket. Something is causing e fluid to leak fm there.

Like i said, last time i tried those 2nd hand ''drive-shaft'' n e sound came back very soon after so i know fr a fact, its not worth.

Since then none of my cars needed to change drive shaft cos my driving style i dont turn steering when car is not moving. I use my cars fr abt 10 years b4 i change cos i am a poor man. [:(]

Wow looking at e cost to change driveshaft nwadays, damm ex.

If i ever do need to change ds, i wil look around fr best price fr OEM parts n just change e CV joint as it sud b cheaper. HKS used to b a popular brand of jap cv joint. Now i not sure cos i never needed to change fr a very long time already.

will this method create air bubbles in the PSF?

Dont worry abt air bubbles in psf. It is not like brake fluid where r fluid is stagnant.

Psf is pumped round n round like yr coolant. U might get foaming in e psf but that means its already overdue to b changed. When i changed mine recently, i did notice e fluid foaming slightly. After it was changed, its nice n fluid again without any foaming.

I think it does matter that there's air in the power steering fluid, but of course don't take my word for it...

After replying, I noticed you mentioned coolant as well, so went to find another few websites that say it's important not to have air bubbles in coolant.

BTW, in the first link in my post above, it says that foam is caused by air bubbles, not because it needs to be replaced.

Air in ps fluid is easily expelled as u turn e steering. I just turn steering fm lock to lock to get any air out. Then just top-up to e full mark n u r done.

Dunno leh. My ps fluid change no problems.

I just expell e old fluid n replace with fresh fluid. E old fluid was foamy. I checked e fresh fluid n there was no foaming.

Coolant change u do need to bleed any air in e system but mine is self bleeding so i just run engine n top-up coolant n it was done.

Maybe if u not sure how to do, just go to a reputable ws n get them to do it fr u n u can watch how it is done.

I think u hv not done these things b4 so better u let e mech do it 1st n u can learn from him.

I've done these stuff b4 so mine is practical experience wh hands on unlike u who seem to put too much reliance on what u read only.

After u hv ''hands-on'' a few times then u wil ustand how its done much better.

no prob. Was just confirming that we do need to worry about air bubbles in the power steering fluid, they are not removed by the pump, and foaming is caused by air bubbles and not an indication that the fluid needs to be replaced.

no prob. I leave it to my workshop to change the fluids. Just so long as you understand the importance of not having air bubbles in the power steering fluid or coolant or engine oil, for that matter.
