A Cheap and Good Upgrade for Ignition

Anyone saw the boxes of plasma ignition booster on sale at Mcwell? Its supposed to boost your voltage from 12V to 16V. Not a big increase (since our car runs at ~13.5-14V when its running). However, its not too expensive @$180. So decide to buy one and try out. Not bad. Pickup does increase since I get higher output voltage from the coil now (due to feeding in higher voltage). Higher voltage also means bigger gap for better performance.

Downside is my igniter gets much hotter. I better think of some cooling for it to prevent it from burning out.

Its not overprice because I have been sourcing for a DC-DC converter for quite sometime and those which can put out 2-3A of current cost over $200..... madness.... Thus this is essentially just a DC-DC converter (conter 12V to 16V), so 180 is still acceptable.

Bro do you still have the packaging?

If you do, can you tell me the brand of the plasma ignition booster?

Was at mcwell to look at it and it looks simple enough for DIY installation.

But forgot to see the manufacturer to find out any info from the web.

Thanks!

I saw it in mcwell. Its by imperial concept. You can see the product at their website. I bougth one to to install too. It does work as advertised but I don't like the quality of the product, its sucky (if you do open up to see). The Made in Japan thing is probably a bluff man.....Looks more like made in China.

Installation is very simple. 3 wires, Yellow, Orange and Black. Yellow is +12V, Orange goes to +ve side of the ignition coil and Black goes to ground. Done....

Thanks bro. I found the official website for imperial concept.

Saw the ignition booster on the site.

Any chance you can take pics of the internals?

I saw a picture of the better China made Ignition booster

and the circuitry is pretty simple since its just stepping up

the voltage.

I am torn between this Imperial Concept which is relatively unknown, the D1spec VSD IV or

the pivot raizin spark VS-S.

D1spec is the one I am leaning towards to. Pivot's is just a voltage

stabilizer for the ignition and not a booster so I doubt it will

have any noticeable effect. But I may be wrong....

If you do a little research, most of the voltage stabs, spark optimizer, etc can be DIYed in less than $50. Got hold of the website. The website even teaches you how to make your own voltage stabs, etc, with wiring diagrams too! Click HERE!

Btw, do you know where to get D1Spec VSD? Cause I know it has an adjustable voltage, pretty cool. Raizin VS-S is just capacitors.

No, I am not talking about capacitors. All these does not increase the voltage. Why the product work simply because it boost the voltage slightly to 16V. It also has a capacitor inside which double up as a voltage stabiliser.

I do not yet have a circuit diagram for a voltage booster. I do know Farnell sells those DC-DC converter that could convert 12V to 18V or higher. However, they are extremely expensive.

I'm thinking it's through the use of amplifiers, but I'm also thinking that this increase of voltage must come from somewhere, and my guess it that it imposes a bigger drain on the battery?

Careful bro... Many electronics in ur car will not like 16V, its pushing it to its extreme limit..... Ur spark plug will sure suffers.

These products may damage ur ignition coil. My fren kenna b4..

Yes, it may damage the stock coil. But I am not not using stock coil so no problem for me.

Thats why its important to know where to install this device. You don't supply 16V to the entire car. Only the ignition coil.

Spark plug will suffer a little. But not much of an issue consider I am using iridium plugs. If copper confirm have to change much sooner.

i only know that fabulous x carries the d1spec vsd iv.was quoted $228 with install.

$228 seams reasonable. But becareful when you install it. For me, I install right at where the ignition coil is. Thus only the coil gets 16V, not the rest of the car.

Btw, 16V is nothing to an aftermarket coil. If you have played with CDI before you will know.

Yeah the price has gone down a bit over the years.

Hmmm... I am on stock coils but i am not too worried about busting one

as my coils are cheap.

I just got a used Raizin Spark for cheap.

Got it hooked up.

Didn't really feel anything different. Lucky I got it used and not new.

Still hunting for a used D1spec VSD IV.

Not sure how difficult it is to install compared to the imperial

concept Plasma booster.

If only I can get a hold of the manual for the D1spec.

Then can see if its doable.
