This Ah Lim is a hero. Salute X 10

Not so smart though. He is already complaining about high living expenses and competition. Shouldn't he be worrying about getting a good job with high pay?

And now that he spread his 'good name' all over the internet and local news by voicing such thoughts - wouldn't it affect his employment chances somewhat? It's a small country here...

Employers - and not just the public sector - don't want employees with such defeatist, 'give-up' attitudes.

If he wants to be so 'famous' - at least secure a steady job first lah...

No matter what the political situation, no matter what government policies are in place, every Singaporean, in fact, every human on this planet will have to grapple with this issue on a personal level : What does their country mean to them?

I don't forsee this question disappearing even if every single FT is chased out and flat prices drop. Afterall, this issue had already been around for ages. I remember doing an essay on it in secondary school and that was 1993 LOL

You said it, man. For me, already discuss during GP class in 1993... What's new? [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

At that time, we were more worried about car prices... COEs were stratospheric back then. Even the richest teachers drove Civic only.

Life wasn't easier when we graduated 20 odd years ago. We had to save, give tuition to get through studies, put off buying a car etc. When I finally got a car on my own with full payment from savings, I opted for a 2nd hand Hyundai Excel and kept it for a long while.

That's how we get by.

Hearing from the younger generation, they seem to expect everything to be made available for them easily.

They better think: If they cannot compete with FTs on our homeground, how can we as Singapore compete with FTs boosting the economy oif their homelands that are rich in size and resources in the global economy? Better to get FTs working in Singapore to sustain our edge in the global economy, than for Singapore to become irrelevant economically.

yeah... i know...

nowadays i see new colleague fresh grad 1 month 2-3k only immediately buy a car

dunno what they thinking

He should have pressed GCT on why his brother can't afford to buy a flat (since it's built by "cheap" foreign labour, why is the flat so expensive?).

very easy to reply.

Yup!!!

PAP will not get vote this time. Nor did it get my vote last time cos I saw thru their wrong ways..... [mad]

Any politicians or political party who comes into politics for the money, claiming there is no one better. Then they do not deliver, deserve a good kick up their backside, deserve being treated like other workers.....cannot work, kanna sack! [whip]

It used to have value,

It used to command awe and respect

It used to be the standards others look up to and

I do not tolerate any government that cheapens this title:

"SINGAPORE CITIZENS"

exactly. I find that increasingly, Singaporeans love to blame the gahment for every little piece of s--t in life.

To those who share the sentiments of that young man:

Don't know what u r defending anymore? When u see an invading army raping your mother, sister, wife and maybe even brother, u will know instantly what u r defending, what this nation means to you....a place where your family lives and grows, where u grew up with your friends and have all the memories that made up your life, whether for good or bad, better or worse.

You are assuming that locals and the FTs compete on equal footing?? Thats a huge mistake, thats why most countries have limitations on who they admit from "lower countries" cos they know they will kill their own local workers. The "limits" here have been set too low is what many are complaining about, and its justified griviences.

Also, no country I can think of gives so many "FTs" free slots in their Unis while their own locals are forced to go overseas for their studies... then dont return... then the govt import even more FTs.

As for the FTs staying home, these so called "FTs" are no golden bullets for our economy if they only depress local salaries, not contribute any new skills.

20yrs ago, the FTs I worked with really brought new skills, today, they only bring low wages.... thats what the new local workers are facing, so I wont be so fast in condemning them.

I doubt the young officer doesn't know about your answer. His question was more specifically targeted at the FT policy. To put a more blunt question :" I don't what I'm defending for, to defend my fellow citizens or the Foreign talents?".

Singaporeans are actually in build in the same image of the government. Our attitude, our behaviour. The PAP government also like to blame the Singaporeans for everything, for not giving birth, for not working hard, for not competing, for not xxxxxx........ lists go on.

Sometimes the government really need to look at themselves 1st and ask why Singaporeans are like that.

It is more like someone was so panic about the greying population and did so quickly to make up the number required and "efficiently" too [laugh].

There is a range of FTs. Not all depress wages, not all bring value and expertise. In the same way, there are those that do bring real expertise to kickstart the major industries for our continued growth.

The overall collective effect is what is important. The influx of expertise is one of the reasons why California has one of the most vibrant IT and knowledge industry.

Being the education hub is key. Thats' when we have access to attract and retain regional talents. Our neighbours know that, that's why they're always trying to grapple bet Nationalism and pragmatism, swinging bet Eng and native language for their higher edn. We fortunately do not have this delimma.

We are also starting to see the 2nd Gen FTs, or new citizens, starting to serve their NS. Over time, they do get integrated.

Regards,

When your house is beseiged by a gang of robbers, your family and a few invited guests are holed up inside, is it possible to defend your own family without defending the guests?

The crux remains that this young man, like many other young people in SG, are deeply insecure. Despite a good education and homeground advantage, they actually fear their invited guests to their homes. Do we not have more faith in our own abilities? Unless they fear their guests sleeping with their wives or robbing their own homes, they can well barricade their homes like a prison and never have any guests.

Already, i know of more and more employers who have gotten sick of ill-performing FTs and prefer to hire more expensive but more productive locals. I think more and more employers are wising up to the fact that FTs are mainly cheap and rotten LOL.

It's time our young people grow up to be more confident in themselves, know that they are the masters of this beautiful land and that FTs are here to be our servants, not our lords.

That is true also. We don't want to hit the wall like Japan, which is really having a problem with enough workforce to keep their economy going due to the aging population.

Yes, they should be more confident in what they want and to vote wisely. The political party is their servants not the other way round.
