Subaru87 Clutched October 25, 2010 Share October 25, 2010 hi forumers, went to JB and looking into using Liqui Moly engine oil 5W30. the price is RM 250. is the price reasonable? and also, heard from mechanics saying its not advisable to use 5W30 for an old year 05 engine, not sure hw true it is? anyway, if i insist using the 5W30 Liqui Moly engine oil, the mechanic advise me to use their 3-in-1 engine flush @ RM88. issit worth it and advisable to do so? Thanks! ↡ Advertisement
Donghai Neutral Newbie October 25, 2010 Share October 25, 2010 bro... beware of products in JB workshop. usually i will buy my own and pay them labour for changing. my mech in msia also say there alot of cheong stuff, inside outside everywhere look like the real stuff but actually is cheong. i have nt used that brand of EO u said so i will nt comment on it. but for the grade of engine oil, 5w30 it is nt too thin. and 5 years is nt very long leh. considering they got 20yr old cars in msia. so those cars use what? 50w100? usually mechs recommend thicker EO becoz engine start to eat EO. as owner, u will know if ur EO lvl drops considerably in a short period of time (weeks?) Yes i agree what has been said about lots of imitation stuff in jb. If u insist on service there, buy all yr own stuff n stand around when ty changing cos ty might even switch yr stuff eh their cheaper imitation parts/oils. Dont waste yr $ on e engine flush. Its just another snake oil. As long as yr engine is still tight, u can use a thinner oil. just monitor if u need to top-up often, then u need a thicker oil or an engine overhaul. Thanks! dun anyhow flush your engine.especially older cars... i'm not sure abt 5yr old cars, but i know 10yr old cars or more better not touch engine flush. once you flush, will leak here leak there. though i did hear my mechanic say "to be safe, as long older than 4 yrs, i dun recommend pple to flush their engine,if want to change viscosity, after you switch to new viscosity oil, do an oil change abt 5k instead of usual 10k for the next round and you're alright" Edited October 25, 2010 by Rationalexuberance
Melvyn Neutral Newbie October 25, 2010 Share October 25, 2010 Actually the issue is not so much of whether the oil is counterfeit or not but rather what oil you've been using all the time. If in the rare case that it's been slushing around in mineral oil for 5 years then should not suddenly swap to synthetic oil as the thinner coating over the moving parts even though by microns only might induce leaking in the piston seals. Usually as the ride gets older, one should move up the viscosity scale as the pistons and seals and seats get sheared and worn down and not get thinner oils. I would suggest getting W40 oils if possible for a good mix between FC and protection. However, judging from your nick, if your ride is a high boost Rex/STi then stick to thicker oils to protect when the boost comes on. As for engine flush, try not to do it as years of accumulated gunk could be pushed even further into the nooks and crevices of the engine. In old engines, such gunk actually help in sealing up the lifters, seal rings etc between the engine block and heads so that blowby does not get by the scraper rings and messing up the oil on the other side. But yours even at 5 years is still quite young since Subaru engines are designed to take quite a bit of abuse so it should still be fine. I'm sure you have a trusted mechanic somewhere here or in JB so why not ask him/her and go by their recommendation instead of aiming for lowest price. Sometimes the 20 bucks saved is really not worth it Lastly, Liquimoly's a decent brand but not sure of the composition. Personally I swear by Motul 300V and its double ester make-up and my ride's been running both on and off track fine on it at 5W40. Quite ex though at 55 bucks for 2L thru a group buy I joined but think still cheaper than outside price of 60-70 bucks for 2L. Hope I helped.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 oh ok thx guys for the inputs, any place in sg selling liqui moly EO at reasonable price? B4 u buy, check if it containes Teflon[PTFE]. If it does i dont recommend cos i screwed up 1 bike n 2 car engines with Teflon additive u add to engine oil. Do a search on PTFE n see what is said about it. It destroyes yr engine after some time.
