I love the W111 and W123. Thought of buying a W123 but terrified of the repair cost if no spare parts. I collected a lot of vintage toy car of Mercedes, they are really nice.

Was browsing through sgcarmart for Mercs which are more than 10 years old and happened to spot a few gems, besides the usual W124s. https://www.mycarforum.com/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/cool.gif

Its interesting to see the classic Merc genes and design slowly evolving over the years as well.

If the owners happened to chance across this thread, could you kindly share with us the experience of owning a classic Merc in Singapore, besides being patient and having wads of cash on hand for restorations and ad-hoc repairs? https://www.mycarforum.com/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/biggrin.gif

Oops,it’s a looong Long time ago.

Have u started yr journey or are u still outside looking in.

U list lots of icon which is almost not attainable ,the easiest for u to start is the 124 or u will b forever looking for an x’cuse!

Dats actually quite a strong masterpiece wannabes culture here even though Dey are being scrap almost every month.

Come to think of it,my journey to ride on classic only started less than 6mths back.

One lazy midweek afternoon,I chance upon my wedding fotos & there with me & the wifey is a handsome w123,the choice of chariot on yr big day or everybody big days, years ago.

I tell myself,I must have one of dis?

Lo & behold,a one owner 124 is calling out to me in sg carmart&the rest Dey says is history.

Me reckon dats a trick to all dis madness,if u buy preown & praying for it not to breakdown, its juzz

stupid, likewise, buying a classic & u dun have a tow truck number on u is realli insane,

U gotta set aside a couple of Ks to sort itself out.

Anybody fancy to get into classic, the time is now.mines a couple of months away from 30yrs old.

Some of them owners are not prepare to renew it for the third time,

What are u waiting for?

The time is NOW!

*ps dat idiom laopok car means.....................back in the olden days the car of choice for everybody or is it for the rich are FORD.

Its old ford car ! dis how it is being translated.

The W124 is indeed an overengineered Merc. Some many examples are still running around in Singapore, even though they are already more than 15 years old.

Mine’s 30 in March!

Gotta cough out some for the coffers @ LTA

If u are still waiting, the time is NOW !

I looked at the Cosworth some time back. The interior was tired and coming apart in some places and at least one gauge wasn't working (can't remember which one!) but it was still a sweet ride. Dogleg shift pattern, took a bit of getting used to since all the shifts are the opposite of what one is normally accustomed to, but the transmission was sound.

No. In the end I got a different manual to scratch my itch. An Alfa Mito. But I recently sold that so I am now manual-less. Edited by Turboflat4

U will nvr get what u Wan by hopping about.

Juzz bcos the gauge is not working & some part are tired!

To get into the classic scene,u must noe exactly what u wan & have tons of patience.

plus also prepare to get yr fingernails dirty,

Dat I can assure u is the fun part.

Cash I’m afraid, is the least of the worry(like real)

Bump into a 126 owner recently ,tells me everything cheap, his spark plug even cheaper

than a motorcycle plug & he need SIX.

Set up yr dream classic & work towards dat.

Dun abort haifway & change when the going gets tough!

The car wasn't for me. The main novelty was the dogleg shifter which I'd never experienced before. Now I have.

No meant as a Lecture ,some discussion, realli.

Its realli confusing.

U jump here, buy there ,then later realised, its not meant for yrself.

Welcome to a typical sg motorist.

Lots of time when Dey decided to going into the car market for some wheels,Dey basically noes what Dey Wans.

But like in most cases, things get in the way,got some promo somewhere, depreciation value is juzz not there blah blah blah.

So what u buy is realli far away from yr mind & dun forget everytime u make a wrong decision & traded it in,u lose a bundle.

It’s still better to stick to whatever u have in mind, forget all the sidetrack & enjoy yr ride.

Buying a set of wheel is all abt research research research almost same as buying property!

I so want to get that W113 and drive it to another Retrolicious concert https://www.mycarforum.com/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/wub.gif

There're quite a few W124 mercs at the carpark around my block. They've been here since I was a kid!

Yup,Dey are there,like for ages.

D olden days merks with their squarish squarish design always looks grand & bring an air of class to any occasion.

Imagine fronting up in a 5 star hotel banquet with their big fan making hell of a racket.

U hear the noise of the fan before the actual car comes into view.

Dis 200E are a $200k plus car in their heyday & if u can afford dat in those days,u are somebody.

$200k in 1990s are f_ _king big deal,all rite .

I know my Dad's dream is to own an old Merc sedan.

One day, maybe. One day...

Yup

U can do it?

Those comming to 30yrs old w124 are veri much affordable.

4-8k,yes it’s not a typo.

But u gonna give LTA 31 big ones to run for another 10yrs.

Its all peanut, dis 124s are $200k car in its heyday & u noe what type of ppl can afford all dis in 1990s.

So if u put yr mind to it,with some patience & dun mind getting yr fingernails dirty & of coarse some little cash.

U can realize yr dads dream or yr dreams too.

If renew at current coe price, it's abt $3.4k depreciation per year.

I am driving a W124 and looking for a workshop to restore it. Anyone can recommend?
