Been reading about this method recently. The method looks good and economical for long distance or open water swimming. However, the course not cheap. $1k for a 16 hrs course. But I think can DIY by YouTube-ing and Internet.

Anyone did it already? Do u think can DIY?

If you are already an accomplished swimmer, it shouldn't be too hard. Just look at how Matt Biondi/Alexandra Popov swim gives you an idea that good technique makes a lot of difference.

If not, then learn to glide through the water and feel yourself moving forward.

I don't see why you should pay 1K for such a course.

I am not an accomplished swimmer by any chance. I feel my freestyle is not efficient, hence I tend to tire easily. Therefore looking at TI method to improve my swim endurance.

You might be better off having a swimming coach to correct your technique rather than going into TI, IMHO.

i DIY from swimsmooth.com

but i still need a competent swimmer friend to observe me and give feedback...

eg whether my spine is straight or like snake when crawling

Ok, this has got me curious.

How many seconds can one shave off one lap with this technique?

Don't know man. But this technique, I do not tire easily and able to swim more laps than before. Last I tried, was about 1min for a 50m lap *one length of olympic sized pool*. Don't matter slow, just matter I can continue laps after that.

No need to pay $1k. Just buy the book. In fact, i borrowed the book from the library.

The author of Total Immersion got it right. The techniques is very suitable for adult swimmers to improve their swimming. About 3 years ago, I started swimming again and this book helped me tremendously. No, I did not enter any competition. But I used to struggle with 1 or 2 laps of freestyle. Now I do 20 - 40 laps typically and get a really good workout out of it. Not only that, I actually enjoy the swim. And all these improvements just from swimming once a week too.

I am in my mid-40s, and with a bad knee, there are not that many sports to choose from to keep fit.

Total Immersion swimming was a turning point for me. I encourage all amateur swimmers to read it. [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

Library got TI book ah... Anyway, I got a second-hand DVD of TI Freestyle and has been learning by videos. So far so good :) The emphasis is really not to fight the water, but to swim with it, and I find that my strokes are less taxing. Also, the 2-beat kick took me a while to get the right coordination, but once I got it, it's really good.

Sofarsogood, it sounds like you are already improving your swim.

Keep on at it as there is no other way to perfect your strokes. I used to do breaststroke more because it was easier for me and more relaxing. Now I cannot bear doing breaststroke anymore because freestyle is so much smoother and it makes one feel like a fish. :D

I consider myself as a good swimmer and this technique is useful.

Its the technique that makes the difference..I have seen yaya papaya freestyle swimmers in the pool and splashes alot of water and sound. But the speed is not there.

I had sharde with some frens on a good technique of freestyle and they too find it easier and lesser effort required to propel thru the water.

Alot of people thot more splashes + more sound equals to fast speed.

Popov has demonstrated good technique makes a difference. The below video for the 50m world record that he set is the testament where he looks so relaxed compared with the rest.

Neutral Newbie

The trick to swimming well is to be one with the water. Relax and drop your head into the water as if you'd fallen asleep on the train. When your neck is relax and your head dropped, you will feel your spine lifting your legs and you are not sinking. Floating well makes it easy to then efficiently move through the water.

Front-crawl has a few set of system sync at the same time. Float, Stretching, Kicking, Body rotation (for air). Learn to float well first. My 4 year old kids I taught all can float and relax in water... Cheers....

Swim to float.By teaching a person to float without doing any strokes is to build confidence in water.

No matter what strokes a swimmer is doing, always get into a stream line position. It takes quite a while for a swimmer to get that right. If the swimmer is a sinker, try by keeping the head level down. And if u r a floater, only keep it halfway down.

Always emphasize on the body first, follow by legs, arms then breathing.

Spend 5-10 mins b4 or after ur swim, feel the water.By playing with ur body position and scull to feel the water. If u dun want to spend $ on a coach, get a fren who can swim well to tell u the problem.Or try asking some lifeguards, which I think some of them are willing to share their knowledge.

Most pple swim for cardio workout.By the way,i do encourage doing crawl kicks.

A person can swim 20 laps non stop doesn't mean he can kick 10 laps non stop.

It's a damn good workout.

TI is a juz a programme. There are some coaches in sin who is very good in strokes correction. But not everyone of them is into TI.They have their own way and the end results are almost identical or even better. There is no right or wrong to practise whatever is comfortable to the swimmer. There is no one style that suits everyone.Different pple different learning abilities.

Anyway, the most impt is to enjoy swimming and it's a very very good exercise.

Juz my 2 cents :D

For those of you whose freestyle/front-crawl is already not bad, try to train your back-stroke. Surprisingly, practising your back-stroke is reputed to improve your freestyle as well. [:)]
