Different Type of Flushes, Myths and Questions

Hi Guys

Need some help on general servicing.

My car is about 3yrs+ old, and about 60K on mileage wise.

Recently been doing some surfing on internet and happened to come across various types of oil flushing, cleaning for cars.

A few basic ones:

Engine Flush

Coolant Flush

Radiator Flush

Aircon Flush

Power Steering Flush

Gear Box Flush

Throtle Flush

The amount of money to be spend seems generally quite big. Also from some sites, it states these as myths.

Can i run a check on which are those that are really necessary and those which are gimmicks, also frequency?

Also in my last servicing, my mechanic told me that the engine oil got burnt smell.

No idea what it means, but it with using OWS Engine oil, have no idea why this problem?

Do advise a 1st time car owner. Many thanks in advance.

I'd say coolant flush is useful whereas power steering flush is not so important (if there's a leak, then need to fix)....gear box flush is the same as transmission flush? If it refers to the same thing, it's only useful if you do it at the recommended mileage (e.g. 80K or 100K), and if you didn't do it then, don't bother to do it later because it might cause more harm later on.

besides engine oil, all the fluids in the car need changing at some point in time because they deteriorate. nothing lasts forever. best to check with your manual or specialist workshop.

auto cars must change auto transmission fluid (ATF) aka gearbox oil regularly. if the AT gives up, it's big money. those who buy used car, good to change the ATF once you take over the car.

coolant, brake fluid etc can top up, but complete replacement will be needed at some point in time.

Gearboc hardly need flushing, it just need replacement of ATF/MTF. For manual gearbox, no flushing, just replace MTF only. Differential also replace only.

Coolant need to flush to remove rust for iron blocks, alu block won't rust.

Engine hardly need to flush unless you don't change EO.

Power steering/brakes/ just change only

Throttle no fluid. Only cleam throttle body once in a while.

Injectors don't need to flush/clean unless its choke.

Aircon just drain and replace the oil only once in a blue moon.

It meants the oil chaota already...... Its breaking down due to the heat. You try pouring some EO on your exhaust. Then you will be able to smell that burnt rubber smell. it stinks.....

hmm ... imho, 3-years @ 60K still quite new. If regular servicing is done on schedule, it should be just fine.

If there is nothing wrong, no changes are needed. For high usage like driving around everyday, maybe just

need to maintain the Engine Oil and Coolant levels.

erm actually my high usage of car started about 1yr back with daily expressway cheonging. Easily 100-120km every time try to be on expressway.

I dun quite understand why engine oil can burnt when it's supposed to last 10,000km. This is the 1st time i encountered, but does it mean change to higher Engine oil like 5W50 etc will be better?

I'm actually driving an auto car, recently felt my gearbox tremble when i rest my hand on the shifter. Not sure if this is normal.

Aircon got oil? i thought only r404 gas.

No, oil is not really made to last 10,000KM. This is just a ballpark figure. Depending on your driving pattern, you may need to change the oil sooner than before, some brands of oil last longer while other shorter lifespan etc.

You don't need to use thicker oil unless you are losing engine oil. Else your FC will go up.

As for slight vibration, AFAIK, its quite normal (my old E39 520i also got slight vibration). You can try changing your ATF to see if the vibration is still there.

As for aircon, yes got oil. Its not purely gas. Its compressor oil.
