Quantum 5th Gear September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 I visited 2nd car market, if the car's mileage over 80k, and it's using timing belt, how can I know the car's timing belt was changed? thanks alot ↡ Advertisement
5936 1st Gear September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 I posed this question to my mechanics before. some models driver can open up the cam side dust casing, if they can be opened with clips. Some models cannot. In this case, either ask mechanic to open to check or assume not changed and invest spend your dollars. That's the reason I drive Toyoti- no timing belt to worry. Timex1441 1st Gear September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 I heard Hyundai and Honda mostly still using timing belt yet? Hyundai Avante doesn't use a timing belt.
Jamstart 1st Gear September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 I heard Hyundai and Honda mostly still using timing belt yet? My Honda doesnt use timing belt too. TS, what car are you looking at? How old? I believe not many models are using timing belt. Or are you mistaken the fan/ alternator belts as timing belt?
Watwheels Supersonic September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 Only way is to check its service history. If previous owner had been going back to AD or regular workshop for servicing, I dun think it's too difficult to check. My guess is most likely haven't change cos for most cars nowadays the major servicing is at 100k km.
Davidklt Supercharged September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 Which model is that? Some cars use timing chain.
Ichibawa 5th Gear September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 Just change the belt and stop guessing. I change all belts and water pump when I got my car just to get these nagging issues off my back.
5936 1st Gear September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 True, there are a couple of models which uses timing chain.
13177 Hypersonic September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 2 things u can do: To play safe, change the timing belt when u have purchased the car. Or dun buy car with timing belt.
Japkoi Neutral Newbie September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 Without a service record, I'd bargain down the used car price by at least $600, to portion off the Belt, water pump etc change, since you can't tell with a eyeball belt inspection, nor if the mileage's been tampered with
5936 1st Gear September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 Doesn't this sound something like the admin fee second hand dealer charges? This is a valid reason and a very strong one.

Kb27 Supersonic September 22, 2010 Share September 22, 2010 5 years old hyundai accent, close 100k Very likely it has not been changed. Unless you can find a servicing receipt stating change of timing belt, assumed it has not been changed. You don't want to land up with a $2k bill for repair when the belt breaks after you buy over. Changing belt on a Hyundai can be very cheap. I buy the package and go JB to do. Only about $250 total.

Civic6656 1st Gear September 23, 2010 Share September 23, 2010 (edited) Play safe and change the belt and water pump at the same time. Dun take risk else if belt snapped, there are more things to change. Most owners will drag till 100kkm especially when they know they changing car soon. Few years back, a friends' brand new Renault Scenic timing belt snapped within a week after collecting car. Towed back to AD to do top overhaul!!! Sian half... You could imagine how he feel... For Chevrolet Cruze, gotto change every 60kkm! Edited September 23, 2010 by Civic6656
Zuoom 1st Gear September 23, 2010 Share September 23, 2010 for 2nd hand car, unless you know the owner n servicing records (trusted source), there's no way to know if timing belt is changed. you would have to do a physical inspection. if so, might as well change the belt there and then. the belt is not expensive. it's always the labour. ↡ Advertisement
