Will normal water wash do harm?

You're not alone, some mornings I have cute cat paw prints on my windscreen and scratchmarks on my boot as they slide off my car at the other end. Stuff happens, get over it, you can't control everything unless you park nowhere except at home and even then you have to park in landed home in order to completely protect your car from all the things that could happen to it.

 

My car is not the best aesthetically but mechanically I keep it in as good a condition as I can.

Yup... same here. To me trying to save your car from dings and scratches is almost impossible. Some kuku drivers dent my number plate on both of my cars either during parking or exiting a parking lot. Everybody would love to park at lots where you are all by yourself or shielded by beams or walls. Then again might invite people to write "DO NOT PARK AT MY LOT" on your car. Birds, cats and rats all love our car as much as we do. Those things that are beyond our control, I have learn to "see more open". Mechanically... the car is in tip top condition which I find is more important.

Not too dirty and no time dont wash lah.

 

If still want to wash, just plain water is OK. In fact, if you check with car painter, most would prefer just water only.

 

I usually wash 2-3 times a month.

 

There are better things to do than washing car or becoming a car slave.

 

wash car means car slave?... so you also car slave lah... wash 2-3 times a month...

 

my frd NEVER does anything to her car except pump petrol (pump attendant)... and drive... the only wash the car gets is when it rains... and during AD service... windows can play tic tac toe...

I have quite a busy schedule lately, I was wondering on this:

 

If I have no time to do shampoo wash etc, is it okay to just use normal water with MF cloth to do light washing and using chamois to dry it?

 

Will it do any harm if lets say I do it once weekly or twice weekly?

 

Also, should I use the cloth in a circular wipe motion when washing or go from side to side as in a straight line?

 

Other items such as MF cloth which could be more suitable? I read about mitt or something.

i think best to use geniune microfiber cloths... not the cheap $1.99 for 3 type... or a good Terry cloth... but still most important to make sure to rinse off dirt 1st no matter wat... if you have a hose at home good for you... if you park MSCP then buy a hose put in your booth... i have a hose can screw into most MSCP taps...

 

as for AA i have been a member since i got my 1st car which was a COE car... i like the feeling of knowing that help is only a call away 24hrs a day... unlimited towing 24/7...

Yea, I read some thread in this forum as well that there is a guy who tried washing his car with only water for half a year after being inspired by another friend who did it for years. So I can relate to what you are saying.

Thats why after reading quite alot, I went to invest in a few items namely

 

3M Cloth (Micro fibre)

Autoglym Aquadry Chamois

Autoglym Finishing Cloth (Micro fibre)

 

I think most likely I'll use the 3M one to do the washing/cleaning. Then dry with the Chamois.

 

After which, when its time to do things like waxing etc then I'll use the finishing cloth. If got shampoo then maybe get the mitt thing.

 

Thanks once again for sharing your experiences. Currently, my office is located at ground level facing the carpark, I was thinking of going early to wash my car there at the car park itself since there is a tap I can get water from. But then there will be cars parked beside me, not sure if its good to wash on the spot like this.

one more thing.... dun be a slave to the car... imagine, that piece of metal already taking up like $1k of ur disposable income every month, every weekend u still have to spend maybe half a day sayang it... some people even more often... isnt it very sad?

 

So people do it only coz its a hobby and they enjoy taking care of their car lah...

New car got a layer of clear coating from car manufacturer to protect the paint. Why wash it away with shampoo and stuff. Just use water rinse and wipe dry.

 

I really wonder ppl has lost their sense of touch. If you slide your hand across a new car vs old car, the new car surface feels like the baby's bottom, smooth as silk...still need to shampoo to wash away the protection?

 

The layer of clear coat is paint right? It wont get washed away with shampoo. Old car if never clay will feel rough. If clay already can be smooth also.

Actually your method of plain water and a micro-fibre cloth is the best for the car. Sampoos, waxes, polishes do more harm then good as they strip the surface paintwork.

As of right now, I am trying to search the term AA or AAS.

 

Just saw an AA van near my work place helping a car start up etc.

 

Was wondering if joining AA for a new car owner like me is necessary now or should I wait a couple of years later since the car is still new at this point, still trying to search it out though.

Alright, I am mentally prepared for the scratches. Will be extra careful on my part. Though I do agree that people have different view points, some treat their car as a transport and would think that the amount spent in money still require effort is a turn off. There are also others who think that since its a large amount invested, they want it to look good and be proud of. I guess its different believes just like different culture. But I do get your point. Another question is the direction of wash. meaning to say, do you guys wipe the MF cloth on the car surface in a circular motion or left to right motion?

 

I believe its left to right? Thats what I have read thus far. Do enlighten me on the factors.
