u need to give more details like:

1) Does it always have the sound or occasional ?

2) During high speed or low speed turning?

3) Turn left or right also got sound?

4) Any other observations you can take note of..

I had this problem a few mths back.. in the end it turns out that my front suspension endlinks are jammed.. but very likely urs might be a different problem also..

If Urs is a Latio, the service centre will change the coupling. But it'll still come back.

Latio symptom is when turning at low speed will have some knock knock sound. Occasionally only.

i was quoted 900 to change the whole steering column, my mechinc advised, since it is so expensive, and my car have only 4 yrs more to scrap. he suggested against it. he said it will surivie that lenght of time.

since he said it can survive that length of time and if you can live with the sound for another 4 years.. then just let it be ^_^

Last time i had the sound problem with my steering.. later found out was the power steering fluid leak... got to fill up the reservior to temp solve the sound.. but final fix was to change some tubing...

if u mention that it was a bushing that was worn.. i dont see why need to change the whole steering column..

is this mechanic ur usual mechanic?...4 year is rather a long time... if bush is worn.. the matter will only get worst...imagine.. one day while driving.. the bush crack or what... and u lost ur steering...

if u find 900 too expensive.. u can go for another workshop for second opinion...

fix the problem before it become a monster..

I'm driving a toyota allion, and I have this knocking sound as well. It happens over rough surfaces and when the steering corrects itself after turning left/right. I bought the car from a PI with a 5 yr warranty. This is my first and last time buying from a PI. I've taken it in to the workshop which provided the warranty 3 times, from december last year until july this year, even left the car there for two days. Each time I got the car back, the knocking sound would reappear before I even got home. Those b------ds gave all sorts of lies, excuses and reasons, just trying to wear me down and make me so pissed that I would take my car elsewhere and pay for the repair from my own pocket. I just don't have the energy and time to deal with these scumbags. The 5 year warranty could have been 15 years, it wouldn't matter; when a warranty claim arises, they don't honour it. So I have been living with this problem for at least a year now. I'm quite sure the knocking sound came from the steering coupling. I've asked around and was told, if I could bear with the sound, it's safe to drive. The steering wouldn't come off or jam.

Can somebody here who has had this problem, share his view/experience. I've taken the car to a workshop but was told the coupling wasn't available as the allion was a relatively new model in this country. Does anyone know where I can buy this part? Or is it safe to drive on? Thanks.

my mechanic is my usual one. he re-oiled the whole column and now seems fine, i have not heard the noise for 1 week now.

bro, i'm driving a '09 allion as well & have this sound. It sounds like a "thud" sound near the dashboard area and whenever i come down on even road from a slope. It also happens when i steer (right) up my multi-storey carpark ramp at low speed.

recently i tried adjusting the telescopic steering column (used to be at highest setting) lower & the noise is less obvious & less frequent.

If it's the steering coupling problem, it will only get worse in time. If I find a solution to it, I will post.
