I am not trying to lessen the blame on the driver. However, even at 50 km/h, I felt it would be quite difficult to spot the girl from 25.9 m ahead. That is the reason why I wonder about the reaction distance at 50 km/h. Visibility is further aggravated due to the bushes and the shadows cast by those columns and other structures.

 

I fully agree that all road users [drivers, pedestrians, bikes, etc...] each play an important role to reduce the risks of accidents.

If the driver is a middle-age school teacher travelling at 55km/h in a simple family sedan, girl pops out unexpectantly and got run over... What do you think is the public outcry?

 

Poor design of road divider, planting shrubs at the wrong places, not fencing up the tracks... the list goes on.

That said, the jaywalking rule needs to be changed and enforced to protect motorists and safety of pedestrians alike.

 

I remember the punishment for jaywalking used to be $20, however i read that it is now increased to $500? Is that true?

 

In addition, think Elfenstar pointed out that in France, if you jaywalk, it is your fault if u get hit by a car. We need to adopt that mentality. Too many pedestrians think they are well protected, if they get hit, the driver is gonna face the music. This has resulted in too many situations where pedestrians think it is their God given right to jaywalk. There have been a few posts where motorists pointed out that pedestrians are even challenging the motorists when they jaywalk despite seeing a car coming....

 

i think that law in france(if there is really one)makes sense. Humans will have better control of their limbs compared to a vehicle. If people choose to be irresponsible by jaywalking ,they will only have themselves to blame should anything happen.

Its like can you blame HDB for building a dangerously tall building if you choose to hurl yourself off it?

yes it should. That somebody is willing to drive a car that is illegal speaks alot about his repsect for the law and for the safety of others.

 

It also speaks a lot about "the sort of driver he is" that he felt he needs to illegally modify AND speed.

 

Taken alone, either is ok, I dun mind modifying cars (actually I am sad that there is not more of it in Singapore) but if you want to modify, be responsible about the way you use your car.

Yeah, but as one bro already mention, if hit at 50 km/h the chances of survival are much much higher, also the chances that the girl would have seen the car and not popped out are much higher.

 

I seriously do think as pedestrians, and as parents, we have a responsibility to keep ourselves safe.

 

I also think that in such a heavily residential area drivers shouldn't expect to have the roads to themselves.

 

We have to realise that people are going to be using the roads and drive accordingly. Each and everyone of us regulates our activity according to the environment. To expect that a residential estate road to be as devoid of pedestrians, or that pedestrians will be as careful there as on a major thoroughfare is just asking for trouble.

 

The speeds the joker were doing were insanely stupid given the conditions. The way the girl and grandfather were behaving, while they may not have been exactly advisable did not even come close to being so stupid.
