Thats important.

[thumbsup][thumbsup]

That's the whole crux of the matter.

think the subaru driver mod his ride for speed and forgot to upgrade his

driving skill

this is true.

One thing to remember, and this is why I am so down on the driver in this instance.

At 50km/h, standard car with "normal" driver the total stopping distance, from see hazard to stop is 30.4 m

At 80 km/h the REACTION TIME alone is 33.1m

This is a very critical difference

Well if like that makes you feel better and sleep secure at night, then what can I say?

80 in a 50 is so far beyond the norm, and so reckless as to defy description..

People jaywalking in this area is "minor".

To put it another way....I hit somebody on head with single sheet of 80gsm paper is (technically) assault. Hit somebody in head as hard as I can with a baseball bat that has a 6 inch nail sticking out of it is also assault.

Which would you be more worried about?

What u listed is dependent. Is there a choice for the victim? Does he have an option not to get assaulted? If he had... Then him still getting assaulted is plain stupid. In this case... Yes the grandfather had. Jaywalking is tantamount to knowing that there is a risk of being assaulted... Whether by a piece of paper or a hammer it does not matter.

Everytime u jaywalk, you do so knowing the risks of being knocked down is present. At what speeds and by what car is inconsequential.

Don't get me wrong though, i am not absolving the driver of any blame. I am just stating that both parties are equally guilty, and as one poster pointed out, it is just unfortunate that it took the death of a little girl to point this out to all of us.

That said, the jaywalking rule needs to be changed and enforced to protect motorists and safety of pedestrians alike.

I remember the punishment for jaywalking used to be $20, however i read that it is now increased to $500? Is that true?

In addition, think Elfenstar pointed out that in France, if you jaywalk, it is your fault if u get hit by a car. We need to adopt that mentality. Too many pedestrians think they are well protected, if they get hit, the driver is gonna face the music. This has resulted in too many situations where pedestrians think it is their God given right to jaywalk. There have been a few posts where motorists pointed out that pedestrians are even challenging the motorists when they jaywalk despite seeing a car coming....

What happens if a potential suicider jumps in front of a passing car? It is impossible to avoid... does the driver get prosecuted as well? It is ridiculously unfair for drivers.

that reminds me of an accident published in the newspaper many years ago...

a cab hit a drunk ang moh who attempted to dash across the expressway... in the end, the cab driver was judged to be innocent...

conclusion is... there is a reason for the low speed limit on roads in the neighbourhood

like i said earlier, it's not just the jay walking... it's those bloody shrubs under the LRT tracks. As a driver, you can't really see if a person is standing on the central divider or not. The shadow of the track, the thick shrubs and the lack of lighting makes it difficult for driver to see if anyone is standing on the divider or not. Factor in the thick thick pillars of the track columns and basically, you can't see nuts at all.

I agree, there is also a reason jaywalking is a crime... too bad it takes a death to wake people up.

Have to stay full alert, ready to jam brake, ready to press the horn, brace for vehicle behind to bang into your ride.

that's my style of driving.

1 hand prepare to high-beam and the other hand prepare to horn.

If the reaction time at 80 km/h is 33.1m, I wonder what would be the reaction time at 50 km/h ?

If the little girl step onto the road into the path of the vehicle, at a point lesser than the reaction distance [at 50 km/h], what would happen ?

I think somewhere round 18 m...have to go check. But alswo, if hit at 50km thge chances of survival very high, at 80 km, almost certain death.

doesnt matter...... it all depends on when was the girl sighted by the driver. Using this website Stopping Distance

It is calculated that a driver with a reaction time of 1 sec and travelling at 50km/h would have stopped his car in 25.9 m

Below is a screenshot of the road where the girl was knocked down. Do you think a driver who is travelling on the right lane would have spotted the girl from 25.9 m out?

there was no intention to lessen the blame of the driver but just to highlight the other party also have some part to play in it....

so stop mentioning things that you think i am trying when i am not

Okay guys, lets stop things at this point lest it degenerates into a farce. I personally viewed the original thread which covered the blow by blow account of what ensued that eventful day.

My point is, while we shouldn't condone reckless driving which levies the premium (of such reckless acts) on the expenses of others, there is a need to emphasize that road safety is a responsibility that is borne by both the motorist and the pedestrian. While it is beyond doubt that the motorist has grievously set the stage for an accident, it is of startling concern that the victim might not have received the best possible supervision by her grandparents. Considering her age, this is a point which cannot be glossed over and put aside.

My concern is that this incident will otherwise set an unhealthy precedence in terms of fomenting unhealthy attitudes with regards to road safety.

Road safety begins with me. Everyone has a role to play.

The price for the driver is a fine, maybe jail, suspension and rediculous insurance

The price for the pesdestrain is death

I agree with you. Thus we must all make it a point to prevent such tragedies from happening. Accidents occur on their own accord as dictated by circumstances. That shouldn't stop us from doing whatever we can and endeavour to do everything within our means.
