Encounter with Suicidal Cyclist in Geylang

We know that quite a number of cyclists have been in the news as of late, getting into accidents on the road, some of which have been fatal.

I sympathize with them, myself having been a victim once when my bicycle got hit by a truck, flinging me off and breaking my right arm in the process. But as we say sometimes, it takes two hands to clap

While i've had more than my fair share of encounters with cyclists with no sense near where i live (Ah Nehs cycling at nite, wearing black shirts, black shorts and riding black bicycles with no reflectors or lights whatsoever), my encounter today at Sims Ave in the Geylang area tops it all

I was driving eastward from Kallang to Bedok via Sims Ave. The junction ahead was green in my favor and i was in the second lane. There was a van in the first lane about one car length in front. Suddenly, out of nowhere, this bicycle pops out from in front of the van and cycles diagonally AGAINST THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. I had to step on my brakes to avoid hitting him, which luckily i did not.

Here's a very simple picture to show this epic stupidity

As a former (and maybe soon to be one again [:p] ) cyclist, I know where you're coming from. Within a week of getting my Mz2 I got hit by a cyclist. Was stopped at a zebra crossing, this dude cycled across it almost hitting a pedestrian, and in his evasive maneuver hit my car and fell LMAO. I got out, checked for damage, checked if he was ok (he said yes) then I blasted him for being an idiot. -_-

I strongly think we need some new fines/laws that will slap fines on cyclists for not wearing a helmet, not having lights front and rear etc. I wonder if TP has caught any for going against the flow of traffic, cycling across pedestrian crossings, etc as yet?

i think most of these gungho cyclists are part of our FT from china. They are not only in geylang. You should try driving around the lanes near Kovan

Be careful. Some of these cyclists (largely not our local folks) are just trying their luck to get hit by a moving vehicle so that they may stand a chance of claiming monetary compensation from whoever hit them.

Btw, they don't just appear in Geylang only these days. We are seeing more and more of these sightings in more common heartlander areas.

are u saying that if the Bros (touch wood) hit one, better make sure he won't have the chance of claiming monetary from the bros? [sly]

If that was that guy's game, he really must have had zero sense in that head of his.

Sims Ave is quite a wide road, and the average speed there is around 40 to 50km/h (assuming no jam). The result of a truck doing around 20 to 30km/h was enuff to throw me off my bike and fracture my arm. At 50km/h impact, we are talking more potentially serious s--t like head or spinal injuries to a cyclist with no protective gear
