they will! cos some of them don't even know we exist!! hahahaha. ah well.. but seriously it really depends on their level of interest in the games. it's the games bringing attention to SG more than the other way round i feel.

side note, i watched most of the ceremony and learnt of the existence of quite a number of countries that i never even heard of before...

Really? How do you know they notice?

I don't get it....

why the negativity...why the need for people (of all why American) to recognize or acknowledge our effort....THe fact is as a nation we are forever in History...THe first country to host Youth Olympic Games...

Why bash your own countrymen? Why bash your children, nieces, nephews or cousins or any relatives tat volunteered n took part in the preparation n the actual events? What pride does that give u or what does tat say abt ur mentality???

No doubt they had been over budgetting, some food catering screw up...but tell me if u had known any big scale events tat never had any hiccups?

Come on people, if u are Singaporeans, juz sit back n enjoy wat our little nation is capable of....we can be sore abt gvt issues/policies, stupidity or inconsistency of our leaders...but when credit is due...PLEASE STAND UP N ACKNOWLEDGE.... if u r really so sore abt the current gvt, let ur vote decide in the next election...Do we have a better alternative? OR when the crunch comes, all the loud voice people become ballless?...ok abit overboard...

I don't agree w a lot of gvt policies too, but I acknowledge all our people committment n dedication in ensuring tat YOG is smooth flowing!!

Hormat Senjatat!

I don't bash the people or volunteers or participants in the YOG. I know people who take part, they are happy, so fine, good for them. I also happy for them. I wish them all the best also.

As an outsider I still maintain that this is a kuching kurup (small fish) event that we, as is typically Singapore, blow it up into some big hyped up thing. "Oh YOG will put us on the map. People will notice us" blah blah. I absolutely detest this kind of obnoxious bragging over little matters. Every little thing we got we must boast to the world kind of attitude, when in actual fact most of the world don't even give a crap and even mock us.

I don't care about the cost, or hiccups, or even the stupid YOG lane (I will give way of course). It's the damn attitude over the whole thing by the Government and organisers that I'm pissed with.

Put another way, if we can just organise the games quietly, efficiently, excellently, without the need for all the extravagent hype and boasting, I would definitely support it.

All I can say is you sxxk....Call yourself a S'porean and u take no pride about what we have come so far....if u feel "lao kwee", please don't try to clock post by starting this type of thread....what are u trying to prove? It only tell ppl you have not been educated well enough to start something more educative but rather negative thread.....

For the information of others, because of this YOG thing and F1, Singapore is known to the world......

You mean before this Singapore is unknown to the world. What has the government been doing for the past 40 years?

I didn't see any International media giving prominence coverage of the event. In fact many of the media don't even mention YOG.

Spending $400m for international exposure???

Fact is no many people are interested in this Mickey Mouse Game.

I don't what you guys expect, world top competition? this is for the youth!

Just watched the swimming on Ch 5, the competition among the countries brought back the memories of beijing Olympic and how we support our school in sport competition at sec or JC.

If there is no coverage on the event, it is not the failure of spore but the olympic committee itself, but this is the first youth Olympic so it may not reach greater publicity yet.

Will you guys be interested in the event if the game is held in big city like London or New York?

The 3600 young impressionable athletics will bring back the good news about Singapore to their 204 countries!

Not forgetting the other half are made up of adult officials from the 204 countries too.

So the $400million spent is not in waste.

Considering its like only spending $2million in each country to promote the Clean Green Garden City of Singapore. Effective and not expensive at all!

The youth athletics will tell their friends and family members, when they grow up to be successful people, politicians, businessman, teachers, coaches, they might do/suggest things beneficial to Singapore. Surely the payback in immense in due course.

Not everything can be accounted in absolute terms.

Like most, i was actually very negative about the whole YOG event, and i still am. But i've to commend the person who thought of the opening ceremony. True, some parts were really boring and looks like NDP part deux. Besides that, there were some spectacular ideas which i thought made the event better than NDP, and in some ways better than the Beijing olympics. My favourite opening ceremony thus far has been Athens 2004. Nothing too complicated, yet extremely touching at conveying the message. The YOG opening has some of that elements. Beijing 2008 was basically the Chinese mentally - bigger, better, with an obscene number of performers to mess up the process. Some parts of the YOG opening ceremony were like that, but the good parts worth mentioning are:

1) the use of the reflective pool behind the stage. Reminisence of Athens 2004.

2) The lighthouse and flame's swirling effect.

3) our own true blue Singaporean boy as the last person holding the flame, running across the tranquil pool, lighting up the lighthouse.

4) the use of the phoenix and dragonboats across the bay

5) the use of a storybook with projected images to tell a story of the monster

6) building around the bay used for projecting lights for the event

7) using a little girl to light up a match

8) IOC president thanking the volunteers FIRST during his speech.

9) Tan How Liang holding the olympic flag.

Parts that are bad:

1) YOG chairman's speech. He needs to learn some soft skills. No handshake with IOC president at the end of his speech. His whole speech had little mention of people who helped out in the event, instead it was all about thanking the government for their assistance and how great Singapore is.

2) Flag procession. Too confusing for the flag bearers.

3) Our president's less than brilliant statement to open the event. Embarrassing indeed.

I think the main reason for the lack of support on the ground for the YOG is because there is no interest for local sports. This basically stems from the government's initiative to be suckers for foreign talents in sports to represent Singapore. To Li Jia Wei, Tao Li and all other FT atheletes, even if you win competitions wearing our nation's flag, you are still NOT a true Singaporean. They are here for the money and glory, not because of national pride. Take a look at Li Jia Wei. Now she's back in China representing them for table tennis, making us true suckers indeed. If local atheletes are groomed and not sidelined by these FT atheletes and win competitions, i am very sure everyone would support them. Take a look during the old days when people such as Ben Tan won in the world arena, everyone fully supported him, compared to the half-hearted support given to the "fake" Singapore atheletes.

How to have interest in local sports? Frankly speaking, I will worry if my kid would take sports as a career in Singapore...

For SG kids to take sports, it seems like it belongs to the elite... Like those fencing, sailing, ....

whats wrong with going overseas? She is not representing them la c'mon. Alot of footballers join other leagues also what. For hopes of winning championship and more money that doesnt mean they are representing the respective countries.

Its also the same as singaporeans going overseas to work. It doesnt mean that they become the citizen of the country they are working in too.

and it's that selfish mentality the garment has in promoting YOG....

what 'only 2.5years to prepare compared to 6-7yrs',

'Singapore so small country, yet can host quite a major event'....

blah blah blah....

fact is,

nobody gives a care about who we are.....

Sorry my mistake. She is participating in their Superleague representing Beijing. But still, the feeling when a FT wins and a real local wins is entirely different.
