life is like that when we are small klids, we are young and passionate about things [laugh]

but when we are older, passion gives way to responsibility and realised that the world is one place far from perfect, we turn cynical

but that's life

i am re-living my childhood through my children and encourage to pursue their passion whichever passion it is [grouphug]

I just want to say to people don't be cynical. It seems many want YOG to fail because it is a slap to Team Thunder. In reality, a failure is a slap to Singapore in general. This boy found something he was passionate about and followed it all the way. IMO he should be commended for his enthusiasm. This is what makes Olympics events great - it makes people do things out of the ordinary.

But to be very honest, I never expected it to happen in a local context.

Dear all in this forum,

I appeal to your good hearts to give this boy some respect.

He is my pupil.

He was not there for your critique, he was not there for the limelight, he was not there as a tool. He was there for himself and the spirit of Olympism.

For those who wished him well, I thank you for your kind words of encouragement.

I joined this forum eons ago becoz you guys gave balanced feedback about cars. Thank you very much.

For those who are cynical, I do hope you have a blessed life too and hope that you are kinder towards your own kids. Maybe your kids get better treatment.

Clarification:

1. He went there because he wanted to get into the YOG action. He was also present for YOG Countdown last year (@ Padang if you don't recall). He was also involved in the Olympic Day run last month at Pasir Ris park. It was a downpour but 500 over kids ran 2010m. All for fun and participation. Not any prize you are imagining.

2. He was there initially to take pictures to share with his classmates and to contribute to the YOG blog for the class which was a students' project. But like all Olympic moments, the run was unplanned and he did not expect to run for 2.5 hrs. That's why he is in slippers and berms.

3. No, he is not poor. He is from an average family who loves him very much and supports him. No, they are not cynical like some adults are.

4. He has school shoes.

5. He needs no sponsor and he has pride. He runs for his passion, innocence and pleasure (when was the last time you did something pleasurable and pure and innocent?) in witnessing a moment of history. He needs no free shoes. You can keep the money for your own children.

6. He is a very good pupil and his homework has been done before the long weekend. All submitted and yes he did turn up for school on Wednesday because there is a mock exam for his PSLE.

7. He needs encouragement from adults. And he hails from Singapore. FT or not, we as adults should encourage such feat of passion, youth and innocence.

8. Shame on those who kept thinking this is an act of propaganda. I do not know what issues you have with the authorities, but please take it up with them, not with a young boy as a tool.

9. Yes, he ran all the way. Only stopped when the lights turned red against his favor. He stayed by the pavements and the grass patches. His parents trusted him. He is an independent boy. Do you trust your kids? Did you wish your parents trusted you when you were 12?

10. And finally yes, he is a star in the class and school but he wishes the hype will end because he did it for 'Fun, Participation and Spontaniety".

Please do not flame the boy. If you do, please spend some time reflecting on what values you are portraying. What have you done today worthy for children to learn?

If you must, then take it out on me.

I do hope Wei Jie can inspire all young and old alike to take things on the brighter side. Life is better when we smile.

Thank you. [laugh]

you say you liked and joined this forum becos ppl give you balanced feedback...

now you are indirectly telling us that we should only give positive feedback bcos it is a respectable feat by a little boy....

i've nothing against what this boy did but i have seen too many really wonderful kids his age who have helped out others who are really in need that things like this are not striking to me at all

there are students in school who take care of other handicapped students

there are students in school who help students who are mentally unsound

there are students in school who speak up against bullying

there are just too many unsung heroes

if you ask me if the 12 year old has achieved something great... i have no comments but i think its good to have some good old fashion fun small kid style, most importantly it seems that the kid is a good pupil and a good son.... just wish the 12yr old kid best of luck

if SG holds World Cup or the normal Olumpi then i am sure lots of ppl from young to old sure support...YOG in SG....hmm.....unless the population mindset has change from education-minded to sports-minded else this is just another international event in SG that cause some inconveniences to the public and business. If this event is held in Australia, i am sure the public there will support all the way......

give credit when credit is due. the torch run has invoked the interest in the many heartlanders. the fact that a lot of the residents coming together mingling while waiting for the flame to arrive is something the residents will otherwise not have the chance.

i am a volunteer during this YOG period. I get a lot of questions by the bystanders when the torch will be next. I see proud parents cheering their kids. I see youths coming together putting impressive acts. I get approched by a 18 year old asking me questions about my full time work and sharing her aspirations with me.

for all the wrongs done by our policy makers (which I am also critical of), i think this YOG event has acheived it's mission.

Of course there are other issues like grossly underestimating budget, weak upper management amongst others.

wei jie's feat is a bonus. i wish him well

Thank you Teacher.

I'm not surprised from those comments, because alot of them cannot even passed their 2.4km during their time [laugh] so this people just shoot comment base on their own judgement.

Tell your pupil this - those amchair commentor spend their life lock inside a 2nd life by moving only their finger, hardly even go under the sun so don't be affected by them [rolleyes]
