Cerano 1st Gear August 12, 2010 Share August 12, 2010 It's not about giving everyone free taxi rides Like I mentioned in the other thread 1. Deploy manpower efficiently and not have 40% of your workforce at ECP coming from west siders 2. Consider the taxi vouchers requests PROPERLY. Merely deciding based on whether volunteers have to report by 7 is not enough. So what if like us a grp of ppl live in the west and need to get to ecp by 7 as compared to a grp in the east ordered to get there by 6:30?? What about job roles? How are the centerpiece of the media interaction in the field of play supposed to operate optimally throughout the period. Bystander50 5th Gear August 12, 2010 Share August 12, 2010 It looks like the organising committee overlooked the fact that most of the volunteers are IT savvy and any complaints not attended tactfully will end up in online forums or blogs. This YOG is a major event and I won't be surprised if you google "YOG", the results will also return all the pictures and complaints made online. By then, take down notices will also be useless since all these will be distributed all over and picked up by foreign media overseas searching for info or verifications. And the foreign media is all over at the competition sites locally, once the story is picked up, you can't prevent them from speaking to or prevent the volunteers from speaking. They can censor Stomp or other local sites, but no way for others like Youtube or twitter and many others. Looks like another few more millions will be blown to shape up the food and welfare image. As for criticisms about welfare for the volunteers (food, transport, etc), yes things could be better but no, it isn't that bad that ppl r made to work as slaves !!! Every procedure n policy that affects the workforce are thought-through to ensure that no one has to endure through hell to get their jobs done~ For example, yes, if a staff (volunteers/paid staff all included) have to get to your venue by 7am, no taxi vouchers are issued (only issued if you need to come in before 7am)... But do not forget, you are also entitled to free public transport rides on the bus/MRT !!! Yes, it would be perfect for everyone to be issued with unlimited taxi vouchers, but nowhere in the entire world for such sporting events r taxi vouchers issued to everyone freely too~ Elsewhere, volunteers really embrace the spirit of volunteerism where despite the inconveniences, all are happy to be part of history-in-the-making !!! Some even travel out-of-their-own-expenses to other countries just to be a volunteer there (Beijing Olympics, F1, etc)~ Of course, a group of the volunteers of 'arrowed' n r complaning etc but trust me from my experience, once the actual events starts n when they starts interacting with the athletes n doing their part in whatever they are assigned, many would relish in the experience that one day when they are old n retired and their grandchildren asks: "Grandpa/Grandma, what did you do when u r young?" You wouldn't have to fumble n think really hard, n then starts to relate how much money u earn, how far u climb up in your career, how many properties u have, how much businesses u own, etc !!! It will bore your grandchildren to sleep zzz... You can proudly say that "Child, I was part of the first ever Youth Olympics Games held in Singapore" :) So dear fellow Singaporeans, lets just do what our bit n help make the YOG a success in whatever little way we can n show the world what Singapore can do !!! \(^0^)/ good on you! sg has many event like this & more to come...we need ppl like you to fill in the space... good on u... btw are you student or working adult? or you from YOG steering commitee? Good on you!!
Mockngbrd Supersonic August 12, 2010 Author Share August 12, 2010 (edited) http://www.temasekreview.com/2010/08/11/yo...erved-dog-food/ Quote YOG volunteers complain about being served “dog food” Due to lack of public support for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), the PAP regime has resorted to forcing Singapore students to “volunteer” for the event to generate fake grassroots support to save its own “face.” According to netizens, students from schools in Ang Mo Kio were “asked” to line the streets last Saturday to “welcome” the YOG torch before it arrived at Nanyang Polytechnic. One irate teacher, who wished to remain anonymous, wrote: “My school students are going to be made to stand around, under the 3pm-hot sun, to pretend that we support YOG. How is that fair? It is like as if we are a communist state – forcing the children to do something that is not only agaisnt their will, but it is also something that would not affect our lives greatly. If the students want to watch and support the YOG torch, they can watch it on their own! Why force the other students to fake support under the sun? 90% of the students in Singapore don’t even care about the YOG, and yet we are forced to pretend that we do.” Another student complained: “I am from Temasek Poly and I am forced to take part in YOG. It is made so compulsory that in the event that i do not take part, I will not get a testimony at the end of my graduation. That is the most irritating thing right now.” Not only are the YOG “volunteers” required to spend long hours doing “sai kang” (hokkien for poo work), they are also served “dog food”. One obviously peeved YOG “volunteer” sent us a photo of the food the volunteers were given: http://./wp-content/uploads/2010/08/yogfood.jpg “This is what I am eating everyday. Even my dog is fed better food!” she wrote. In the meantime, public anger over the YOG continues to boil over with nearly a thousand Singaporeans joining the “I hate YOG” Facebook to express their disgust and disdain for the PAP’s “vanity fair”. Have you been “volunteered” for the YOG? Please share with us your unpleasant experience here. here's what the athletes eat tho http://sg.yfittopostblog.com/2010/08/11/fo...r-yog-athletes/ Edited August 12, 2010 by Mockngbrd

How are the centerpiece of the media interaction in the field of play supposed to operate optimally throughout the period. We're not some backend staff Personally, I'm not involved in organizing how the volunteers are deployed etc but I would just give my personal views... When you need to roster thousands of volunteers, you will realise how hard it actually is... In a perfect scenario, every volunteer will be deployed to the nearest venue nearest to their house, every volunteer will be given their dream role somewhere, every volunteer will be gurranteed to turn up punctually (if they do decide to turn up at all), every volunteer will be given taxi rides to-and-fro everywhere... But we live in the real world, and trust me, it is ALOT easier just sitting in front of the computer, typing out and listing how things could be improved but when you see the actual situtation on the ground, it is just impossible to cater to... There r volunteers who can only turn up on Mon whole day, Tues cannot, Wed PM only, rest of week cannot etc... There r volunteers who signed up but yet do not turn up as they are not given their preferred role/location, n leaving the ground staff frantically helpless last min when 10 manpower is xpected to do the work but only 2 turn up... There r volunteers who turned up for the first 2 days n after being bored, they drop out for the entire competition period... From what I know, as much as possible, location requests are accomodated as-best-as-possible to make it convenient but it is impossible to assign the right number of volunteers to every location based on their location requests... Certain competition venues also requires specialised skilled volunteers which mean they will be assigned to the specific venue, no matter where they live~ All-in-all, there r scarifices to be made from individuals but there r also intangible returns !!! I guess the best quote here is 'Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country'... Seaweed 1st Gear August 12, 2010 Share August 12, 2010 What you thought..well I got to agree should it is an ideal situation.....i won't mind being a volunteer...but in this society...to most of us is 手停口停 the alternative could happen when the grandfather do not have money and hse etc etc.... Grandchildren : Heh grandpa....what have you been doing in your younger days??? how come xxx grandpa got car...got hse...got money....you don't have??? Grandpa : last time i always volunteer xxx events.... Grandchildren : s-h-i-t....grandpa...why u so stupid....xxx told me his grandpa were so busy working when he was young so that his son etc can have a gd life later on....grandpa...what you doing ??? u leave us s-h-i-t !!! Well the alternative could be too extreme...but it somehow could happen!!!!
Seaweed 1st Gear August 12, 2010 Share August 12, 2010 from your example..those aren't real volunteers !!! If I really want to play a part...it does not matter where I am send to...it does not matter what time....so the question arise....did the volunteers did it for a "reason" or they are really proud to be part of it....???? Mike1234 1st Gear August 12, 2010 Share August 12, 2010 Well, i guess it may not be easy for such planning as its SG's first time in YOG... Maybe there's lack of experience thus there migt be some unhappiness in some things....
Mustank Hypersonic August 12, 2010 Share August 12, 2010 i think the issue is not about the organising but rather people are not convinced why there is a need to host yog in the first place and why the 300 or 400 mil are not used for other purposes hence when there is rumour of inadequate food given to volunteers or when extravagent gifts are given to foreigners, poeple beat their chest and cry foul

Duckduck Turbocharged August 12, 2010 Share August 12, 2010 at first it cost 75mill, then our ministar say more costs came on after they won the bid, so to avoid looking like stupid CBs they absorb all the new costs lor. So the rest of the world is saying" u want us to come to play sports in your country, u pay for it". of cse we dam rich anyhow budget from 75m-387m!!!! thats a farking huge cost estimation difference! If our ministar knew the cost was 387m in the first place, do u thk we wld have bid for it? That is the question. I dont thk so coz that is HELLUVA lot of $ which many pple can think of other better places to put it to use.

Seaweed 1st Gear August 12, 2010 Share August 12, 2010 well...money aside...I am never a supporter of all this games....it is not pure sport....to me it is commercial sport...everything go around the dollar sign....that's it...one person that I am really proud of is the yellow shirt boy with slipper that ran with the torch unconditionally....that's real interest without motive.... but i also could not help thinking he is a little ↡ Advertisement
