Good-Carbuyer 1st Gear August 30, 2010 Share August 30, 2010 Seriously, I would like to think that c@rlube is cheap and good and that everybody should be using it. However, it did not appear to work in my case as I thought it sheared down at around 7k. There a few more people who thinks it sheared down and there's UOA that showed it sheared down. Maybe all 5w40 sheared down to 30, but I probably won't get a chance to find out. Youtube adverts are unfortunately just adverts. I hope you have the best of luck using it. Just saw at Giant, it was selling at c-----e 5W-40 at $27.99. I believe among the cheaper synthetic oil in 5L bottle

Pisces69 6th Gear August 30, 2010 Share August 30, 2010 The 5w30 (light blue label) seems to be design for GM engine. Not sure if Optra using GM engine despite its Chevolet? I heard from a salesman few years ago that its Opel engine? Not sure Opel any relationship with GM? I think no problem going for 10k km usage with CLTR 5w30. The TBN value is depend on the type of additive used, for example if I remembered correctly, Boron can also act as detergent but the TBN is lower than Calcium additive (also another detergent additive). Amsoil AFL 5w40 fully synthetic TBN at 8, but Amsoil fully synthetic are well known for extended oil change interval. Schaeffer #9000 5w30 starting TBN at 7.1, but Schaeffer are know for its lower starting TBN but good at retaining its value, comparing to other oil which start out at higher TBN but drop faster. There is also a UOA on Schaeffer #7000 5w30 (a semi-synthetic) having a TBN of 7.5 and after 7.6k mile (>12k km) the TBN drop to 2.2 ~ 2.5 with no make-up oil at all. The UOA results was quite good and can go for a few more miles easily. ============ Wah so chim. Anyway I think Optra is using Holden engine. Holden, Opel all GM cars. Maybe I just stick with the 40 wt can already.
Pisces69 6th Gear August 30, 2010 Share August 30, 2010 the problem with the optra's engine is its a old piece of junk my friends optra 63k do timing belt already need change valve gasket seals all leaking already and optra timing belt kit also need to change the 3 seals at pulley side, also all common leaking problem use 5-6k can eat 1L engine oil use 30wt eat more ============= Ya at 70k km I did my timing belt & all the seals, tensioner & bearings/water pump. But never change e valve gasket. Only the manifold rubber gasket cos it was leaking. Hmmmm....isnt that the valve gasket then? But my engine never eat eo at all. I drive fr 10k km the eo never drop at all. Not even abit?

Good-Carbuyer 1st Gear September 1, 2010 Share September 1, 2010 (edited) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRo3emMQOIE I believe there is significant differences between mineral-based oil and synthetic engine oil. The same among the different grades of engine oil. Likewise, between muiltigrades and single grade engine oils If we compare engine oils with the same SAE classification, the differences like vicousity, centistokes... slightly different (can be insignificant for most of us driving to work and back home only). Only thos who drive outstation, go to the circuit, really can benefit utilising the precise differences among them. In our climate, with our traffic jams, I believe multigrade engine oil like 5W-40 would be best buys for most cars. The frequency/intervals between each engine oil filter replacement is the more critical issue for each car brand/model. Example: my previous Accent visual alert on low oil pressure for a few seconds longer if oil filter not replaced after 10,000km (dedicated 10,000km oil filter size, so can be wasteful to use synthetic engine oil?) Ken4555 1st Gear September 1, 2010 Author Share September 1, 2010 5W/40 is the best all rounder... just look at some brands which carry only one type, it will be 5W/40.... some 5/30 & 5/40... but seriously who checks the oil vocosity really??? we believe the label like young children in school believes eveything the teacher says.... words that labels have to push up their sales... *racing oil *better FC *cleaner engine *more power *smoother ride etc.... KNS if compare to s--t used oil any new oil also better lah... ↡ Advertisement
