U lucky u get a good 1. But mostly cannot last or perform well. I now using a china tablet pc n so far, it is ok.Dunno how long it last. Anyway if it spoil, i just throw away cos i got it free. Pisces69 6th Gear August 29, 2010 Share August 29, 2010 By the way, I happen to came across some oil specification for the CLTR - 5w30 and 5w40. CLTR 5w30 Longlife (GM) Kinematic Viscosity @ 40 deg.C = 70 Kinematic Viscosity @ 100deg.C = 12.2 Viscosity Index = 167 Pour Point = -36 deg.C Flash point = 230 deg.C Sulfated Ash = 1.4% TBN = 9 CLTR 5w40 Synthetic Kinematic Viscosity @ 40 deg.C = 84.7 Kinematic Viscosity @ 100deg.C = 14.3 Viscosity Index = 176 Pour Point = -33 deg.C Flash point = 228 deg.C Sulfated Ash = 1.22% TBN = 10.1 ======= I dont really ustand all those specs. Maybe u can just tell me good or not? The 30 wt is GM certified? I drive GM car. Is it recommended for Optra? I dont mind trying 30wt but how long b4 i need to change cos its ''longlife''? The 40wt i run till 10k km n it still ok. Tks.
Pisces69 6th Gear August 29, 2010 Share August 29, 2010 Totally agreed w yr opinion.. A lot of people here waste their $$ on expensive engine oil which are not necessary as our cars are not high performance cars like Ferrari or Lamborgini... I have used c-----e for many years without any noticeable engine perfromance issues. Key thing is to change regularly. In general, I think we tends to overdo on our car maintenance and cleaning of our cars. ======= So true. Maybe cos cars in SG so damm ex so pple dont mind spend more fr e best to protect their ex ''investment''.Hahaha. I see car like a horse. U buy a race-horse fr $1 mil, u spend a bomb just to look after it. But u buy a trusty strong work-horse fr e farm, u just feed it hay or it eat free grass n sleep in a stuffy old barn. It still does what it is supposed to do for many years with much lower costs compared to a race-horse. Worse part race-horse might not even b able to recover its purchase price in winnings during its whole life or it break its leg on 1st race n has to b killed. All investment gone up in smoke. Raining Neutral Newbie August 29, 2010 Share August 29, 2010 i tot tbn is the bigger number the longer lasting, which makes the long life CLTR less lasting? can any oil gurus can help translate the figures..

Ignorance, complacency, marketing, more people pay for consolation that they tried to get better by paying more (always the reverse, you pay less if it is better)Example: representatives of a local Authority said better design means more accompanying maintenance. I told them a good design should be maintenance-free (they were shocked be enlightened on their ignorance of their 'expertise')

The 5w30 (light blue label) seems to be design for GM engine. Not sure if Optra using GM engine despite its Chevolet? I heard from a salesman few years ago that its Opel engine? Not sure Opel any relationship with GM? I think no problem going for 10k km usage with CLTR 5w30. The TBN value is depend on the type of additive used, for example if I remembered correctly, Boron can also act as detergent but the TBN is lower than Calcium additive (also another detergent additive). Amsoil AFL 5w40 fully synthetic TBN at 8, but Amsoil fully synthetic are well known for extended oil change interval. Schaeffer #9000 5w30 starting TBN at 7.1, but Schaeffer are know for its lower starting TBN but good at retaining its value, comparing to other oil which start out at higher TBN but drop faster. There is also a UOA on Schaeffer #7000 5w30 (a semi-synthetic) having a TBN of 7.5 and after 7.6k mile (>12k km) the TBN drop to 2.2 ~ 2.5 with no make-up oil at all. The UOA results was quite good and can go for a few more miles easily.
Octopus 3rd Gear August 30, 2010 Share August 30, 2010 Can share the declared centistokes readings? Nothing much, cos the reading is just how the oil flow at the specific temperature under gravity. It basically categorised the oil under which weight/grade (i.e. xW30, xW40, etc). From what I see, the 5w30 is at the higher end of 30 weight oil. Unfortunately, HTHS value are not published. I feel this info is more important as it also reveal what's the oil characteristic when being pumped. HTHS also had a slight relationship to oil pressure and fuel economy as discussed in BITOG forum, more so that the centistokes value.
