Alfisti168 1st Gear August 7, 2010 Share August 7, 2010 My car's thermostat housing broke. Need to be replaced. Was quoted $110+ for the replacement of it, inclusive of labour. Is it reasonable? ↡ Advertisement

Bro, i think you are referring to your engine coolant thermostat gasket right? I think it still user-serviceable i.e. you can DIY if you want. Try calling Song Yi and ask if they have the the Engine Coolant Thermostat Gasket. Most Stockists are CoD so you may want to pop by and buy directly over the counter if they do have it. Alfisti168 1st Gear August 7, 2010 Author Share August 7, 2010 (edited) Actually I not really very sure what that thing is called though. Its a hose, that sort of lost its position and fell off. The point where it lost its position is as circled in red. (btw the picture is taken from the internet. didn't have a camera phone with me so can't snap pictures.) Happily1986 5th Gear August 7, 2010 Share August 7, 2010 (edited) How about circling the spot in this picture? it is supposed to be a snapshot of Optra's engine bay. just to be sure Edited August 7, 2010 by Happily1986
GoodCar 4th Gear August 7, 2010 Share August 7, 2010 Tbis is a known problem for Ecotec engine. The hose housing is make of plastic. Like all plastic and rubber, they will deteriorate after sometime. They will deteriorate faster under harsh operating condition and environment. Heard that some people change it to metal housing. Anyway, all model of car will deteriorate faster when "whack" most of the time

GoodCar 4th Gear August 7, 2010 Share August 7, 2010 (edited) Yes, this is the picture, I can see the hose housing from here . Did you change your water hose housing to metal one? Miss my dear Optra Edited August 7, 2010 by GoodCar
Happily1986 5th Gear August 7, 2010 Share August 7, 2010 Hmmm like that it shouldn't be the thermostat housing liao. But if you do change the hosing, do check the thermostat housing inside to see if it is okay. If you do call Song Yi or do a quotation for repair, just say that you need to replace your top radiator hosing then they will understand.
Happily1986 5th Gear August 7, 2010 Share August 7, 2010 Your picture look more like taking from the bottom. Nice bottom Opps heehee just now link salah picture. I drove my ex's Optra for a few months before. I like the torquey feel. I miss the "ting ting ting" noise before you insert the key and crank. Hmm then in this case $110 seems a bit too expensive liao for just a piece of plastic/rubber. Oh one more thing, since all my coolant should be gone by now, should I buy my own coolant pre-mix to let them fill or should i let them top up for me, with this service being included in the labour charges? Hmmm i don't think they will be so nice to "bao" the cost of the engine coolant in the "labour" charge wor. I think should call them to check first. In any case if they state got to charge, i don't see why you can't ask them to charge only for labour i.e. you bring your own engine coolant. Should be cheaper than getting from them. Call me cheapo or what during servicing i bring my own engine oil etc Cheers
