What are the tell-tale signs of a flooded car?

Just a qn on this topic, a vw gti flooded. Spent over 3mths in the workshop and a major overhaul done. All lossible parts to replace are replaced... Still can buy? Hope don get flamed as I am deciding on it as the owner has been truthful abt it.

It depends on how serious were the flood damages, and what were done. I believe it is difficult to replace/repair what were not visible to the workshop people when the car was delivered to them. They can do what they saw, but are those all the damages? We may never know, even if we drive the car for a while. Some problems can surface after quite some driving instead.

By the time the once flooded car reaches the dealer, these signs or evidence would have been removed by the workshop or dried up or gone....

very true. a lot of 'experts' trying here to give non logical advise

Heard that one person bought a 2nd hand Merc E. Was very happy until one day when parked under the hot sun, the entire window inside fogged up. Only then did he realised that car was a victim of flood. The fog on the window came from the wet bottom insulation under his carpet.

Therefore, one way to avoid buying such a car is do a surprise check on the 2nd hand car shop if the car you wanted is parked under the sun. See if the window is fogged up inside. If the aircon is switched on during test drive, you cannot see the window fogging up.

Flooded car will result window fogging under the hot sun?! [rolleyes] But i have one friend, his car widow fogged up after a very heavy rain when his car was parked in the open carpark?! Wonder what cause the fog? [:/]

Most likely some seepage of rain water thru the door seals into his car interior. Time to replace the rubber seals.

How could it be fogged up? It should be water vapour??

The appearance of fogged up windows is due high humidity (water vapour) inside the cabin. The water vapour will then condense on the windows into very tiny water droplets. The water droplets will not evaporate away because the humidity in the air is too high.

The same reason why you see fogged up windows on cars in very dark car park [laugh][laugh]

Just check the screws at absorber area, if it is drown car, water mark will still remain. Check the car boot door, undercarriage, under car seat to find water mark and smell...it is not easy to remove the drown history.

I think sometimes might be because the car interior was very hot after parking under the hot sun for a long time. Then when it rains the exterior of the car is cooled down by alot so the hot air in the car has lots of water vapor that condensed on the windows? Don't think that its a sign of flooded car as sometimes i see those new cars parked at the showrooms also have this happening. The windows start to fog up from the inside after the rain.

You may be correct but I have not personally experienced this on any of my recent cars, maybe because the interior is always kept dry by switching on the aircon and the humidity stays low even when the car is in a parking lot.

But for some of us "old" enought to remember the days when air con was not yet common, driving the car during rain is a horrible affair. The moisture from our breath keeps fogging up on the cool windows.

Is your friend in the habit of driving with the windows down (no aircon)? If yes, then probably the cause could as suggested by NZY and NOT due to water seepage.

(edited)

Coz.he got himself another new car so its like his second car. And yes, insurance claims made so not a pinch. Plus.he is a friend so he was truthful about it to me and willing to let go at a price of 85k for a feb 08 gti

If its DSG I would be wary. How sure is the workshop on the soundness of the car electronically?

I used to drive a car with electronically controlled gearbox, some sensor failed and I experienced gear 3 throw to gear 1 and gear 1 go reverse. Its not funny. The AD did repair it and it was problem free for next 6mths but I still lost confidence and sold it.

Look 5 threads up. That poster offered a theory on why some car window fogs up inside after a heavy rain.
