If the car is supercharged, turbocharged, twin-turboed or twincharged (like VW), it is FI. If the car got no turbo or whatsoever, it is NA.

Turbonetics 2nd Gear July 18, 2010 Share July 18, 2010 (edited) NA=Naturally Apirated engine FI=forced Induction engine(turbocharged, supercharged or Nitrous) sports car or rather fast cars are made with different concept by the manufacturers. NA cars are able to last longer in race like F1 cars. however, for FI i would say its more suitable for drag racing. some popular FI cars are Mini cooper S,Mitubishi Evolution,Subaru WRX,Subaru Legacy GT,Audi TTS,Bugatti Veyron,Porsche 911,Volkawagen GTi,Mercedes AMG...etc some popular NA cars are Civic Type R,Civic SiR,Lamborghini Murcielago,Lamborghini Gallardo,Ferrari F430,Ferrari Enzo,Maclaren F1,BMW M power(previous model)...etc Edited July 18, 2010 by Turbonetics
Walkingtree 1st Gear July 18, 2010 Share July 18, 2010 Normally Aspirated basically means that the air used for the combustion engine is sucked in at atmospheric pressure. This limits the amount of air that can be "forced" into the combustion cycle, which in turn limits the amount of power that can be generated from the engine. Current limit is around 100-110bhp per litre iirc, but most are significantly lower. The opposing side are the Force Induction engine, which utilises either a turbocharger or supercharger to force more air into the combustion engine to generate greater power. The amount of power that can be generated by FI engines are quite mind-boggling, with figures in the vicinity of 250-300bhp per litre do-able, but requires very deliberate fuel mapping and high strength aftermarket parts to ensure reliability. Typical stock power for FI cars are in the 125-150bhp per litre range, mainly to keep manufacturer production costs low. NA or FI engine can be found in both sedan/coupe. But in the past, it was more commonly found in the sportier models of Jap cars due to the Japanese road tax structure (something like ours) which favour smaller capacity engines, whilst european/american cars tend to go for big capacity engines if more power is desired. However, as technology improves to negate the traditional deficiencies of FI engines such as lag, high fuel consumption, component reliability amongst others, more european models are also going back down FI route. Turbonetics 2nd Gear July 18, 2010 Share July 18, 2010 so to speak, means a saloon car is normally NA , while a Audi R8 , Nissan GTR is FI ? NA or FI is not looking at the car body, but rather its enigine set up. GTR is twin turbo which is classified as FI. while Audi R8 comes in turbo diesel and NA petrol variants.
