Weiming 1st Gear July 18, 2010 Share July 18, 2010 Modern spark plugs should come pre-gapped but if you are using those long-lasting types like Iridium etc., then it might be good to check the gap (different cars have different gap distance, check car manual for yours) once a year for peak performance. You can buy such a tool from Ebay: Spark plug gap tool
Mini-itx Clutched July 18, 2010 Share July 18, 2010 (edited) Gapping spark plugs can enhance the performance? Any side effects? Yes, increasing the spark gap can increase performance due to longer spark. However, this also means a higher voltage is needed to break down the air resistance and create the spark. Stock ignition may not be able to produce enough voltage and hence causing misfire. If you are using aftermarket ignition systems from brands like MSD, Crane, Mallory, you should experiement with increasing the gap to improve performance. I just tried increasing the gap to 1.1mm and the performance improvement is very obvious with my Mallory coil. Of course, downside with more powerful spark and shortening spark plug's lifespan. Other methods to increase performance is side gapping. I also do that to my NGK iridium plugs. Edited July 18, 2010 by Mini-itx
