What if tyre bursts above 120kph?

What would happen? would the car spin out of control?

Will fitting Run-flat tyres make a difference in terms of control after tyre bursts?

Asking this because frequently driving up to Malaysia and hit speeds above 150....So thinking of fitting Michelin Pax System(run flat)

A lot of Malaysia car don't have run-flat & it is still driven at that speed.

If really happens (touch wood), lift off ur throttle, hold on to your steering wheel tight & believe in german technology.

Some yrs ago, my fren driving BMW E46 survives head on crash with Merc W123. The only injury is his hand got burn by explosive from airbag.

I wonder if you know how run-flat tire works.

If your car is on run-flat tires and they still burst that means someone planted a mini bomb on your tire. :D

dont worry so much James.... honestly runflats will spoil your dad's W221 ride comfort. you'll feel like you're sitting in a 5 ser with RFTs.

your W221 has built in TPMS so why worry? Just swap the spare tyre

Yes that is true. I've heard a lot of the new BMW's uses run flats which make their ride comfort very bad.

I have only seen the Tyre Pressure Warning system, not monitoring system. But is that good enough?

would the system warn you early enough so that you can change your tyre?

That's one of the only things bothering me when traveling to Malaysia.

I use run flat tires. [:)]

Is it need? Maybe, Maybe not, but at least I have a peace of mind.

What type of car do u have if u dont mind me asking?

On my comand APS i can monitor the tyre pressure status so if the C-class has it, S-class definitely would too

yes definitely

Yes i know what you are talking about. But mine is specifically Tyre Pressure Warning System.

And i have never seen it whilst playing around with the system.

I saw on the options list Tyre pressure Monitoring system. So that was it.

Its in the secret engineering menu.

btw... the installer is very very good and reliable. your W221 doesnt come with GPS right?

Yes all Comands have a secret engineering menu. trying holding 3,5,7 yours i think. anyway the installer is trustworthy [thumbsup]

and since you already have comand it wont involve extensive changes. only adding a GPS antennae + programming. as good as factory

Agreed,

I was heading Cameron H'lands on the Tapah stretch when a rusty old M'sian VAN going about 110kmh, 2 cars' length ahead, had a burst right front (must be a tubed tire going by the way it went off).

The VAN reduced speed steadily (without brakes, as I didnt see any lights), and at the same time slowly changed 2 lanes to the road shoulder.

What mastery of control [speechless]

Did I mention all these while the Unker driver was laughing away to his passenger? [sweatdrop]

having run flat tyres does not mean u can still speed. if your car is out of control and is destined to hit something, be it tree, barrier or vehicle, no tyres will save u.

I think there are 3 types of run flat available in the market:

1) Michelin PAX- Need special Michelin rim meant for PAX. Can use with any tyre. With the run flat protection, your unsprung weight is heavier. Bit of sacrifice on ride comfort.

2)Run Flat tyres.- Stiffened side walls, tougher than low profile tyre and as mentioned by all the senior citizens of MCF, ride quality gone. Available from bridgestone, goodyear and continental.

3) Run flat protection band- made by Tyron UK. SPF installed for their WRX. Steel bands installed around the tyre walls. It lock beads of tyres during a flat. Can use with any tyre. high speed stability improved due to stronger centrifugal force acting on road. running at 150kmh, wheels feels like sticking on road.

Negative: Heavy- for 17" rim around 1kg per band. acceleration slowed down, more bumpy-increased unsprung weight, major problem-- steel band prone to corrosion.

I had these Run flat Bands. Need 2 sets for my 17" rim. Already removed due to corrosion. Got to have special tools to remove them.

Run flat allow you to go to drive yor car to safe area to get it replaced. It must be used with a TPMS. Without TPMS you will not know there is a flat, an continue to drive at high speed until tyre disintegrate.... out of control.

Michelin PAX not available all sizes. I doubt Chin Sin Hin carries them. But it is the better option among the 3. That's my feel about it.

So I have removed my active tyre protection and depending only on defensive protection, which is the TPMS.

Temperatures and air pressure in the tyres will increased or decreased when we drive. So TPMS will monitor and update us with the status, and sound alarm when critical temp / pressure reached or tyre puncture.

Going back to your question if tyre burst at 120kmh. I experienced at 110km/h when I drove over a red brick. Front left burst. Dont brake hard, Dont turn off engine-you still need power to control. Reduce speed gradually, see how much you can control steering. Drop gear- that time only 4AT also drop down. So its like 110 to 90, 90 to 60... so on till stop. So for me it was lucky that front wheel burst and got plenty of break down lane for me to use.

How come the car did not spin out of control?? Surprised because I would imagine if a tyre gives way at those high speeds the car would not be stable. Could the Traction Control help 2?

as seen on TV, those cop chases in USA. Spike strips are used. Even when the tyres burst upon contact, the car does not lose control most of the time. Instead, they drive on until the rims are sparking the road. Makes you wonder, right?
