I have some traction problem.

I drive this Toyota Vios 2006.

 

Recently, again, when i am doing some sudden steering, I can feel the car takes 0.5 second to respond to the direction of my steering wheel direction that I turn to.

 

 

Last time, that's January 2010, diagnose that my struts are "dead" so I replaced with whole brand new struts.

Now, i don't know what's happening.

 

 

My tyres are relatively new with 70% ++ of thread wear leftover.

I using Toyo DRB 195/50/15 and it is slightly lighter than most tyre in the market. This is a directional tyre.

My rim is lightweight rims.

I can only guess that what you're experiencing is understeer, which is actually normal, especially for front-wheel-drive cars.

 

It takes some speed into significant corners to experience understeer. So I'm thinking that this is not something that suddenly happened to your car, but just that you experience this because of the "sudden steering."

 

 

Understeering is where the front wheels lose traction. You may have experienced an improvement when you changed your struts, which adapted to the turn better and hence reduced understeer.

 

Understeering is supposed to be a safe bias for cars, because all you need to do is slow down and turn the steering more.

 

But push it above the limit (too fast into a corner or too sudden a turn), and your car will not be able to turn...

I am also having car issue but worst, I am driving a 5 years old lancer and today while turning to JE from Bukit Batok West Ave 6 my gear got stuck and sudden car die and I was stuck in the turning pocket :(

 

I am here to say I AM SORRY for what happen to the driver behind me I am sorry that I have created problem for you all

 

And I would like to ask why gear is being stuck and i cant change them? I have clutch in many time and try shifting gear everywhere before I can change gear again to move on am I facing bad gear box? What should I do? or was it normal?

 

I am a new driver that why I know nuts about it so sorry once again

my concern is i drove many many car, only this car which is what i always drive seems to have this problem.

i have a front strut bar left over by previous owner.

 

any possible issue on the front strut bar?

If I were you I remove all the aftermarket struts and anti roll bars (aka ARB) first and drive stock to see if it still understeers. IMO if you add on too many struts and ARB the car chassis becomes too stiff which dun even allow to flex where it should, you will find your car drifting. I think this is what you are experiencing.

 

The correct thing to modify is the ARB. If you want your car to handle around corners change your ARB front & rear to a thicker item. Struts are really not necessary.

There can only be a few reasons.

1. Grip of the tyres are lousy

2. Your tyres are not in full contact with the road (struts/bushings worn can be some reasons). When you turn, the tyres "tilt" to one side so only part of the tyre width is gripping the road.

3. You entry speed is too fast for your tyres and suspension to respond. Solving points 1 and 2 will solve this also. They are all inter-related to give you good grip and steering response.

A strut bar can only help (if at all) but should not be the source of your problem.

 

But usually it is undercarriage braces that can help tighten up the steering and hence allow you to have better control when cornering.

The effect of strut bars / anti-roll bars can only be felt when driving fast into corners.

 

If you are indeed complaining about understeer, they can help you somewhat.

 

These bars stiffen your car's chassis so that your suspension can do the job they are designed for (without the car's chassis flexing).

 

For the anti-roll bar, you should just upgrade the rear anti-roll bar. This will ensure that your rear suspension are at the same level (not one up one down). This will make the rear of your car move out more during a corner, and hence reduce understeer.

 

For the front, you should allow the suspension to move freely and adjust accordingly to the corner (no need to upgrade the anti-roll bar). This gives better grip up front. A lack of traction up front is what causes understeer (failing to turn as you desire).
