Xtraz 1st Gear June 21, 2010 Share June 21, 2010 Just came back from Malacca/KL/ Segamat. Found the map is not so updated even I have updated the set. Was in Malacca looking for Wonderland theme park, you can see the destination but no navigation to the point. Sad. Then in Segamat, certain road was not there too. My bro was using the Ga**** brand, no problem at all. Hope Marbella can do something about it. Thanks. If I am not wrong, most local Garmin users here are using Malsingmap, which is better in terms of more coverage of routes. For Singapore navigation, the malfreemap should be good enough. I normally will have both set of maps and can toggle if one of the map doesn't have certain routes. Most of the time Malsingmap is better in my own opinion. Even locally, it has more POI it seems. Xtraz 1st Gear June 21, 2010 Share June 21, 2010 dont think it's necessary cause the vendor is in this thread also QC wise, Garmin seems to have lesser problem. The vendor said the new chip can last for 2 hours. This is still really not good enough. Even Holux is better than this.

If you search Republic polytechnic, same thing, the malfreemap doesn't have the route within the polytechnic, but malsigmap has it. POI wise, malsingmap is also better. Xtraz 1st Gear June 21, 2010 Share June 21, 2010 Hmm... like that I better switch permenantly to Malsingmap liao. But in terms of routing....frankly, malfree is better (slightly shorter navigation) and more accurate (sometimes with malsingmap, it will thought I am on another road, when in fact I am still on expressway). So there's give and take.

The new Garmin chip in 2xx series and other boast a newer chip with fast lock-on and it should be less power consuming. So we should be expecting more than 4 hours for these newer Garmin GPS
Redstorm 1st Gear June 21, 2010 Share June 21, 2010 (edited) Hmm... like that I better switch permenantly to Malsingmap liao. If you are using Marbella, you can use Malsingmaps? Both MFM and MSM are equally good on both sides of the causeway but sometimes one map may perform slightly better over the other one but none of them is absolutely superior over the other when comes to navigation. It's hard to beat a community of locals who are reporting road and POI changes as they occurs vs a bunch of hired hands mapping the roads once a year. Even Garmin recognised this and worked with malsingmaps, although personally I prefer to support malfreemaps.

My bro was using the Ga**** brand, no problem at all. Hope Marbella can do something about it. Thanks. Dear mycarforum member Jamstart, Thank you for your valued feedback and we deeply appreciated your kind and continous support with Marbella. We understand Wonderland Theme Park is a new theme park opened in May 2010 and therefore it is only included in our June 2010 SLA Mapking map data. However, for enhancement of POI and better routing and navigation direction. We strongly advise our user to switch to Malsingmaps when they travel aboard to Malaysia. Malsingmaps is an open community platform which allows users to contribute new POI and road development focusing in both West/East Malaysia. Malsingmaps is the official map partner in SG/MY Garmin units too. Please enter Mapking > Setting > Switch Map and kindly select on Malsingmaps PEN Malaysia or Malsingmaps MY/SG which has a connected maps between Singapore and Malaysia crossing over the Checkpoint. There is also a map update for Malsingmaps and please kindly refer to the hyperlink below to download the map update. http://www.malsingmaps.com/forums/download...6fde10492e75d26 This should improved the map data and re-routing within Malaysia. The map update procedure is as follows (please pardon us if it's not well explained) 1) Download the file from the link above 2) Take out the Micro-SD card and insert it into your PC/laptop 3) Look out for "navigator" folder. Click into it 4) Look out for "maps" folder. Click into it 5) Look out for "WM" folder 6) Unzip the WMX2_Apr2010.zip and extract out the 24files inside the *zip folder 7) Copy all the entire 24files extracted from the WMX2_Apr2010.zip and overwrite with the files found inside the navigator/maps/WM directory 8) Map update completed. Please do not feel hesitate to contact us if you have further queries. Once again, please ignore this map update message if you have just recently purchased our Marbella GPS series at recent PC Show @ Suntec Convention Centre. This map update IS NOT applicable to your Marbella as we have included the latest data at PC Show 2010. Thank you Yours Sincerely, The Support Team Maka GPS Technologies Group
Xtraz 1st Gear June 21, 2010 Share June 21, 2010 If you are using Marbella, I dun think you can use Malsingmaps. Both MFM and MSM are equally good on both sides of the causeway but sometimes one map may perform slightly better over the other one but none of them is absolutely superior over the other when comes to navigation. That is good information. I was thinking to get Marbella. Will Malsingmap be included in future? I noticed my contributions to MSM were also migrated to MFM. So more or less, I think they are the same group of people but maybe representing different groups. Maybe I am wrong.
Redstorm 1st Gear June 21, 2010 Share June 21, 2010 (edited) I know why, because Malfreemaps look nicer. I prefer Malfreemap for navigation but for POI and more coverage of route, Malsingmap is good. Yeah, MFM looks nice because of the colourful polygon of buildings but too much polygons can slow down the map drawing during navigation; that's why MFM have lite version for those who does not want the polygons. Redstorm 1st Gear June 21, 2010 Share June 21, 2010 (edited) That is good information. I was thinking to get Marbella. Will Malsingmap be included in future? I noticed my contributions to MSM were also migrated to MFM. So more or less, I think they are the same group of people but maybe representing different groups. Maybe I am wrong. I dunno about Marbella as I dun use it and also have no connection with them. For Garmin, I can tell you that many members, who are from MSM, are also members in MFM. That's why you see new POIs and routes appearing in both map at around the same time. For countries that have web communities creating maps for Garmin, you will realise that their third party maps are even better than not just Garmin official map but also maps from any other GPS brands. One may argue about maps from Mapking, Papago, etc. being equally good but lets not forget that their maps are compiled using Mapking or Papago compiler with map data contributed by Garmin users in both MSM and MFM. In a way, users of other brands also benefited indirectly from contributions made by Garmin users in both communities. If Mapking, Papago and any other brands do not have an agreement with these 2 communites to use their map data to compile their own maps, I doubt they can have any good maps to rival those from MFM and MSM. This is because no brand including Garmin is in a position to create a map comparable to those done by a group of enthusiasts who devote to updating POIs, tracks, etc. every week. Mapking, Papago and even internationally renown brands like Tom Tom and Magellan, which are very popular on both sides of the Atlantic, do not have web communities to create third party maps for these brands partly due to the lack of a third party compiler and also the popularity of their brand or rather less popularity.
