Bangkok's largest shopping mall, the second largest in Asia, has been destroyed by fires.

Reports indicate that the fire, started by protesters shortly after their leaders' surrender, blazed on for hours.

Fire crews could not get on the scene and the department store's own fire crews were unable to stop the blaze.

I understand that the RS are fighting for what they think is a worthy cause, but the way they went about it was all wrong.

The conditions they set had no chance of being accepted by the government.

I was watching the situation merely with interest but any neutrality went out of the window when they pulled the stunt to pour blood. It was way overboard and after that, any call they made, for eg. to have UN step in, etc just rang hollow, at least to me.

They were given more than enough time to leave and caused, at least in part, the situation they find themselves in now. And then now this, burning down CW BKK. What's this? Has CW BKK done them wrong? Have the ordinary folks in the BKK streets done them wrong? The RS has to take their share of the blame and not act as if they have clean hands.

I may have my pain points about our government but really, it is when you see nonsense like what is happening in BKK that you appreciate law and order, even though there may be a price to pay to enjoy that peace.

The whole affair that led to this situation is from the tainted military coup in 2006.

The current powers shot their own foot. The red shirts are created by that coup.

A whole country royally screwed.

And MM Lee can say that our army will overturn a "freak election result" as if it is the right thing to do. [:p]

Hong Kongers are the ones to watch when it comes to universal suffrage and social action.

Their protests are peaceful usually. A good model to emulate.

This is karma. What goes round comes round.

The army overthrow the Thaksin gov., now the Thaksin supporters come back and try a coup themselves.

They better pray that this problem only lies in Bangkok. If those RS spread into other cities, then the current gov. is finished.

Agree. I feel this could be the beginning of a more serious & tougher rebel from the poor.

Neutral Newbie

Agree. I feel this could be the beginning of a more serious & tougher rebel from the poor.

The real root of the problem is the growing social divide between rich and poor and stopping the protests does not solve the problem

It HAS already spread to the other provinces and cities for a while now; just not widely reported unlike Bangkok news which is the focus of the media attention currently. It's going to be worse in the northern provinces which is predominantly populated by the rural poor and is where Thaksin main power bases lies, the grassroot support and movement in these areas is extremely strong and organized.

But fresh elections will be delayed till after September, which is when the new Chief of Army will be appointed, the Annual Budget will be passed (where loyalists are rewarded for their actions and support) and new civil servants will be appointed to important offices in the Civil Service. That is why the powers-that-are have adamantly refused to hold elections before November and also why the Red Shirts insisted on an early election before September - both parties want to be in control when the all-important month rolls over.

It's now a waiting game, where the Red Shirts will step up insurgencies attacks across the North in an attempt to further destabilize the Government and force them to dissolve Parliament before September and hold fresh elections. On the other hand, Abhisit and his shadowy backers will do everything in their power to hold on until November hoping that the momentum and stamina of the Red Shirts will be worn down before then.
