I want affordable but I won't take the risk with used gearbox. How much better would a used gearbox be when it's more or less the same age as mine?

I know overhaul is imminent la, but since I just changed my ATF last week, drive another 30k and see if the condition deteriorates during the period. If it doesn't, then continue with the ATF change cycle until it deteriorates noticeably

I have been doing research for at least 2 years already, had the jitters after my first ATF change in 2018. But till now 90k km and 3 ATF changes later, my gearbox still doing ok. Not tip top, but still ok la

I did my old merc at Jackson. Prices all about there. What drew me there was they have a torque converter machine to open and then weld it back. Also they had sufficient work benches to strip the gearbox. Many other workshops in Singapore do it on the floor.

Don't mind me asking, which transmission specialist you went to opened the gearbox on the floor? So far all the transmission specialists I have been to, all have specialist workbenches for the gearbox dismantling job.

If it were me, take out the parts…don’t know how to put in liao. 😵

I suppose it comes with experience. Once you are familiar, you will know which parts belong where. For my, I have my own system to remember where bolts go, by arranging them in a specific order as I dismantle them. Of course, not as complicated as a gearbox, but complicated enough for someone who has never taken anything apart before

2008 Camry gearbox leaking.

Please don't loud loud as I have a few Camry to clear.

I keep telling Toyota is good and pay a bit for for Camry as its the best!

Just did my gearbox 2 months ago in Aug 2022. Symptoms were a slipping gear when I accelerated, and sluggish move off when I engaged D gear from park. 

Car had 1+year of COE left, and the gearbox guy gave me the below options:

1. Overhaul gearbox - $2k

- 6 months warranty, 3-4 days downtime

2. Go with a used gearbox (not recon) - $1.3

- 1 month warranty, 2 days downtime

Naturally, I went with Option 1.

Everything works like a charm now. Gears engage smoothly, and no sluggish move off

Got ws do for -1k also. (Normal cars).

A used gear box. Say toyota. Cost about 300 buks+- nia. 

Not that hard to replace.

I see how people drive in Japan I think their used gearbox will last a long time.

They pick up very smoothly.

Not like Ah Bengs here redline the car and then jam brake because of next traffic lights.

And then redline to next traffic lights 50m away again.

Wah sayang. 1+ year of COE left and you went to overhaul. Unless you are planning to renew the COE again, I would have scrapped the car or looked for cheaper recond gearbox options.

Which shop did you do your overhaul at?

I'll take one if you sell me at paper value. I need the savings to cover the 150% road tax and major maintenance, seeing that you're a crooked dealer
