Tigershark1976 Turbocharged April 30, 2010 Share April 30, 2010 unless ur car is very rare, otherwise, most workshop will usuallytrade in the faulty gearbox with re-condition one... just like what they do for alternator.

Seabass_sg Neutral Newbie September 26, 2014 Share September 26, 2014 Hi. Last wkend my AT gears refused to shift from 1st gear n I sent to the WS for repairs. They changed the sensor n reprogrammed it but informed me that the condition of my gearbox is not gd. They recommended me to overhaul it at $3,600 (warranty 10,000km) or they can replace with a reconditioned one (japam import n warranty 2 wks) at $1,400. Currently my gears change is still ok n relatively smooth but seemed noiser than before (not sure if is imagination) and sluggish when going beyond 80km/hr. Like to seek advice on whether I shld get an overhaul or reconditioned one since the difference ard $2,200. The WS say will provide me with another car for free while my car is in e WS (2 - 4 days). I driving a Mazda 3SP n COE expiring ard 2 yrs 5 mths. TIA!

If not too much difference and you intend to keep the car for a few more years, overhual is better, recon GB is always a gamble (might break down on the 7th month).

Bottom line, dont listen to workshop.

Bicolor 5th Gear September 26, 2014 Share September 26, 2014 (edited) Thanks. Maybe I shld change my ATF first. Any idea how much it cost to change n top up n how long does e process takes? Cost varies depending on different workshops and type of ATF used, can't advise in this aspect as I usually supply my own ATF. The process itself, if not combined with other jobs, is quick. Can be done within half an hour. If it's just old, bad ATF causing gearbox sluggishness or rough shifts, the improvement can usually be felt within one change, but it's recommended to do two ATF changes (the next one 10k km later or during your next engine oil change) as with the drain and fill method, not all the old fluid will be drained. Usually only 3 to 5 litres will be added (in my experience, about 3.7 litres each time for Mazda 3), and this will mix with the old fluid. Regarding changing the gearbox, it would be better to seek a second or even a third opinion from different workshops. Some workshops are very quick to suggest replacement or complete overhaul, but others are able to save money for customers by repairing the faulty parts instead of just swapping things out.
