i was just wondering if you guys go on long family road trips to malaysia.....

do you guys think that it is a better idea to rent a car in malaysia......... or it is safe enough to just drive up your own car?

especially all the bros who are familiar with malaysia.... whats your take?

For us, short trips is like 2D 1N to places like Johor. Kota Tinggi waterfall, Sedili, Desaru or melaka & such.

Longer is 3D 2N to Cameron Highlands, Kuantan, Kenyir Lake/Trengganu.

All times we drive our own cars & so far nothing ever happen. Anyway, thats the fun of RTs is we drive our own cars to enjoy it on the open roads.

On many road trips to Malaysia. short and long trips no difference...

been to Malaysia for 6 days 5 nights, johor all the way to Penang and back.

so far so good, safe.

Just dont offend or act too proud Singaporean...

one observation... certain places esp towns, try to speak Mandarin or dialects instead of speaking English. They know you are a Chinese, why you speak English...

KL and tourist spots speak English ok...

Personally, I would prefer to drive own car for long road trips.

Main reason is becos u r aldy familiar with your own car. Just nid to go for a check up with your workshop before such trips and let them knw your intention.

I normally drove my own vehicle when traveling up north which sits 4 adults comfortably.

However on my last trip i had 7 pax, so no choice had to rent an MPV,

and i will be driving a rented MPV again on my coming trip to Genting next month. [rolleyes]

To me, Malaysia is generally a safe place to drive around in your SG registered car.

So far, within Malaysia, the longest road trip for me was 5 days 4 nights. Longest duration for not seeing my car, which was parked at Jetty is 3 days 2 nights.

My longest was 10D9N.

Singapore -> Port Dickson -> Ipoh -> Langkawi -> Lake Kenyir -> Cherating -> Singapore

One whole circuit around Malaysia - total of almost 2200km. It's safe, if you obey their "law"

For me driving my own car is a must because I am familiar with my car after all. I am more confident as I have know what maintence have I done before the trip.

One thing to take note, even if you drive a Singapore rented car and you got into an accident (touch wood), you still have to pay a significant amount to get the car tour back to Singapore and another significant amount to pay the rental company. I don't think the insurance will cover all. Please check in details with the rental company. Also check what if the rental car been stolen.

If you rent a car in Malaysia and all the a/m happens and you have covered enough insurance, I believed the impact will be minimum.

we have currently planned to explore the western stretch of Malaysia (even though i would love to go to Terengganu  )

we plan to spend arnd 2 days at each destination therefore planning to go to arnd 5 different destinations.... confirmed destinations so far are KL and Penang (still wondering which other destinations would be good..... also still wondering if i can somehow slot terengganu in haha)

exactly... that's why i was thinking of renting a MY car if i go with my family........ especially the older folks will get very stressed if something bad happens to the family car(e.g. stolen) if i choose to drive it up.... and it will definitely and entirely spoil their holiday mood

but i think and as all the bros have mentioned..... malaysia is still relatively safe

I prefer to drive my own car to travel around Malaysia. You know your car well!

I drove about 1200km during last Deepavali holiday (3D2N). It's safe and smooth.

Singapore ---- Mersing ----- Kuantan ---- Bukit tinggi (Berjaya Resort)---- Genting Highlands -- KL -- Singapore.

Just obey their law....

Western coast???

Malacca, Port Dickson, Lumut, Penang. @ days at each and 1 day to get back. 9 days already.....

Anyway, longest I've left my car "unobserved" was at the Mersing car park. Got back 4 days later from Tioman to find a whole host of issues. Speaker at one side not working, ABS lights intermittent (ABS module died), car almost couldn't start, wierd rpms at idling and driving. Wonder if it was stuck by lightning.

I've been to Lake Kenyir twice.

Both times were very pleasant experiences, especially the 2nd time after the refurbishment efforts a few years back. The rooms are not luxuriously appointed, but definitely cosy and clean. The bathroom is as big as the sleeping area, and the kids enjoyed the disney channel at night when there's nothing much else to do.

Make sure you request for a unit that faces the lake - it's really nice to wake up to the sound of birds and monkeys early in the morning, and drink a nice hot cuppa at the balcony. Bring along mosquito repellent if you like to remain unmolested when you walk around the resort.

Activities:

1) Deer feeding

2) Paddleboat / Kayaking

3) Island hopping

4) Table tennis/Dart

You probably want to settle all your meals in the one and only restaurant, unless you are keen to drive out 25~30km to a nearby town for coffeeshop zi char. The buffet spread is fine, but it does get a bit tiresome after a while.

3D2N should be more than adequate, unless you really like to vegetate.
