Wont spare tyre be useless if you change your rims??

i'm on 19".

if there is really a need to (which I hope not!), just change and drive slow to nearest tyre shop.

anyway, my spare is 17" so it's okay, I think? =P

Your title misleading leh... change rim size is it?

 

Not true lah, I once used 16in spare though the my size was 17in.

 

Why the qn? Be more adventurous.

i was thinking more in terms of compression of the tyre because more rubber = more easily compressed and it will be a pretty rocky ride....

you are not supposed to be speeding when you're on the space saver spare anyway, i don't see how much bumpier it would be?

you sound like a beginner.....

 

there's plenty of car that come with space saver spare which is also known as donut..

 

if you read your manual, it would tell u that the spare is meant for short distance drive at low speed to ensure you get to your nearest rubber shop for a pitstop..

 

but if you are worried, can upside your spare to a full size steel rim with a spare rubber waiting inside your car boot to touch the ground.. which.. erm.. would usually not be used at all.

 

so how much would a 18inch rubber be? :D

Will not be useless,

 

Example, if for a 15" rims, the specs are :

195 /65 R15

 

If you up 1 size to 16", you must get a specs like

205 /55 R16

 

So even though you change to a bigger rim, you must get a "55" (smaller size but for 16") tire. In this way, your 15" spare tire still can be used on 16" rims

 

(i got this knowledge from some tire shop, good to know)

Not useless at all, except for crazy people who rush at full speed after changing to the spare tyre (I know a guy who did that). It's meant to help you drive at a slow, steady speed to the nearest safe place to stop or get a new tyre.

 

My car currently has 18 inch rims, and earlier this year my front left tyre was punctured. Managed to pull into a petrol station and changed to the spare tyre, which has only an 14 inch rim. No unusual feeling while driving steadily at normal urban (not highway) speeds.

for me, i beri heng. my right front tyre got a 50cents swollen part after the tyre wall hit a big stone at high speed. the heng part is that forte came with 5 tyres and rims. it was juz 10000km when it happened so what i did was juz replace the affected tyre wif the spare in the boot. no big bill to take care of as no need to buy any tyre. i am assuming that one front tyre brand new mixed with 3 tyres which have travelled 10,000 have not much difference (please advise on this!). so now i am still taking my own sweet time to find a tyre with same specs to replace the tyre with swollen part to be spare. now my only question is this. i am due for 10000km rotation. like that this senario how to rotate huh? many thanks.

yup

 

i wasnt concerned with the overall diameter of the tyre because i know increased profile will make up the diff. i was concerned that since there is more rubber due to the higher profile, it will be compressed more on that corner and the sidewalls will not be able to take it and thus fail.

For my car, the spare tyre is already one size smaller by default. For FWD, usually recommend to put the spare tyre at rear. For example if front left swapped out, move one of them from the rear to replace the front left. Then mount the spare tyre to replace the one taken from the rear.

 

I used spare tyre before and drove from Ipoh to SG. No problem going at 150Km/h.

the overall diameter of the wheel should be kept as close as possible to the original size. usually the manual will show wat tire size to use if you change to a bigger rim.

 

If you intention is to change to much bigger wheels and ignore the overall diameter, if difference is too big then it may give you problem.

 

or take out the spare tire and change to those tire repair kit.

One important note - next time when you check tires pressure, make sure to check and maintain your spare tire pressure also. I've once drive on my spare tyre with only 130kpa when one of my tyres was punctured.

My spare is a steel 14" rim & my tires on the car is 16" But its still ok cos both sets & same Outside Diameter cos the tire profile is different.
