Darryn Turbocharged April 22, 2010 Share April 22, 2010 Just got an SMS from Stand Chart... "Loan up to 4X your monthly income" Sorry Mr. Standard and Mr. Chartered, I have absolutely no plans to lend you any money at all, on the other hand, it might be nice to be able to borrow a few dollars - I need a new set of coilovers for that money pit of mine. ↡ Advertisement

Darryn Turbocharged April 22, 2010 Author Share April 22, 2010 lol, but in sms prolly shortcutted the message of "Get a loan of up to 4x ...." Well I would simply have said "borrow" ...is only an additional two characters....besides, going by the count I just did, they had space for at least four more characters. Osiris 1st Gear April 22, 2010 Share April 22, 2010 well, you can email them to include you in their do not call list "Under the Telemarketing Guidelines for the Financial Industry issued by The Contact Centre Association of Singapore, all financial institutions whould maintain a "Do-Not-Call" list. Consumers who do not wish to receive calls from telemarketers should inform their banks about it. " http://www.abs.org.sg/cms/index.php?option...amp;Itemid=109# so for i haven't heard from standchart & other banks for many years since my request

Joseph22 Turbocharged April 22, 2010 Share April 22, 2010 Nuh uh...as you say "the act of lending". IF I lend, it is going from me to you The bank wants to lend to me .... they don't want me to lend..... From dictionary.com.... Loan... "the act of lending" Lend..... "to give (money) on condition that it is returned and that interest is paid for its temporary use." "to make a loan." The bank wants me to TAKE money and to ACCEPT a loan. If I were to loan four times my salary it is flowing out from me, not flowing in to me.... Standchart loan up to x4 your month salary. They omit the standchart nia lah. Darryn Turbocharged April 22, 2010 Author Share April 22, 2010 Standchart loan up to x4 your month salary. They omit the standchart nia lah. If leave out the stan chart as you suggest then it should still "lend" and not loan, so still wrong. This is one thing that used to rile me when I was writing press releases and the like, I would say "correct grammar is this way" and people would not believe me, they would then go round and round the block telling me why I was wrong, and (because they were client) I would have to argue the point instead of just telling them to shut it, and do what I say. The problem is (and this sounds silly) I have never studied grammar. So I simply don't know why it is wrong, I couldn't tell you the difference between a split infinitive and a preposition of my life depeneded on it. I just know what sounds wrong. And LOAN is "confirmed, chop, die" wrong. Just as much as "off the lights" or "keep the things" or "close the tv" is wrong

Darryn Turbocharged April 22, 2010 Author Share April 22, 2010 "Loan up to 4X your monthly income" BAD GRAMMAR Loan, up to 4X your monthly income. BAD GRAMMAR Get a loan, up to 4x. STILTED BUT PASSABLE

Yep I know exactly what they mean, and it is clear and straightforward. The point is though, that these guys use language as their profession, it is a highly thought through communication that is (presumably) created by professionals. Grammar should be correct. If we cannot expect appropriate grammar from someone that used language as their profession, what more can we expect from the "common man"?

To be fair to him, he is refering to the level of english of the sms which is like to be composed and send by Ah Beng and Ah Lian. No i am not saying those who send it is definitely Ah beng and Ah lian, just that a friend of mine working in the bank in the same department (sales for credit car and Loan department) say all his colleague are Ah beng and Ah lian like him
