Best Sze Chuan food!

One of my favourite restaurants is Ba Yu Ren Jia (八渝人家) at 791 North Bridge Road, tel 62967958. The chef used to run the kitchen at one of the top restaurants in Singapore and struck out on his own. I like this so much that I frequently bring colleagues and friends over at lunchtime.

The food is spicy and flavourful, with the spice complementing rather than drowning out the taste of the food. Only downside is the decor, but the consolation is that your money goes into the food, rather than into renovation... [:p] If you ask for 'genuine' Sze Chuan food, it's so hot that some of my friends have trouble eating it...but they do have a milder version if you ask for it.

For lunch, they offer a value-for-money a-la-carte buffet price for a minimum table of 4 - something like 16.80 or 17.80. Ordering direct from the menu would be a little more expensive.

The reason I'm putting up all this is that I went at lunchtime today and ate from 12PM to 1:10PM. My friend and I were the ONLY customers in that restaurant throughout the lunch sitting. The chef told me that the lunch crowd had shrunk significantly since the 'IR' opened, as the usual lunch crowds had been shipped straight to the IR rather than staying in town to spend..... evening crowds, when they serve a steamboat buffet, are slightly better.

The food was as good as ever.

Selfishly, I'm hoping more of us will try the restaurant, and if you like it, try it more often. It's just such a shame if great eating places like this eventually fold up due to lack of traffic.....
