Sgsell101 Neutral Newbie June 23, 2010 Share June 23, 2010 bought a 2nd hand Aug 06 Volvo S40 a week ago. Car dealer claimed the lowest quote was from Chartis (not sure if I spell it correctly) at $1140. I have never heard of this company but anyway signed up cos too lazy to look around. I was shocked to find out that the excess is at $1400 and no NCD protector. Did i overpaid? I have 50% NCD. hard to say if u r overcharged..maybe can tell us more of yur driving experience, age, gender....all these will affect the premium

RadX Moderator June 23, 2010 Share June 23, 2010 Aviva is indeed competitive...charging me only $1.2k....whereas my current insurer charging me $1.9k..... the choice pretty obvious.... for me, clean record, 1 car on 50% and this on 20%
Berncsp76 6th Gear June 23, 2010 Share June 23, 2010 I took up Aviva after 3 yrs with Auntie Lucy...damn with their so called 5% loyalty discount + 50% NCD still $300 more expensive than Aviva. I choose the cheapest option ( paperless on-line print + insured only) but the total package still on par or provide better coverage than Auntie Lucy. Includes courtesy car for max 10 days use too. Prior to that asked for quotes for almost all available insurance companies in Singapore, all quoted me same premium as Auntie Lucy if not higher. Crazy... FYI my profile 34yrs, office manager position, 1.1A kia picanto, 10yrs driving exp, 11 yrs license, 50% NCD with no claims.

Kkttt 1st Gear June 23, 2010 Share June 23, 2010 For those considering Chartis, just to share my horrible experience with them. I bought a new car late last year and signed with their in-house linked insurance, which is Chartis. Obviously the premium was not the lowest around, but anyway signed with them to make things easy. Passed the car insurance contract of my previous ride to the SE, and she helped to claim the remaining premium from that insurance company. Got the car early this year, signed the insurance papers. 3 months later, Chartis sent me a letter saying that my NCD was not what I claimed (40%) when I signed the contract, it was 20% according to them. Demanded that I pay an extra amount. I called them up, and they told me I was with AIG previously, and according to their old records, my NCD was 20% at that time. I explained that I've since signed up with another insurer, and my NCD had increased to 40%. I had also handed over my contract as proof to the SE. Chartis insisted that according to their records, my NCD was at 20%, and demanded I pay extra. When I insisted I will not pay for their blunder, they threatened to shorten my insurance coverage. In the end, they agreed to check and call back. 2 months went by, and other than sales calls from Chartis advertising their home insurance, no one called regarding my car insurance. Every time their sales called, I reminded them to fix my car insurance problems before trying to sell me anything else. Finally last week, someone called regarding this matter. I repeated the whole story again, and they agreed to pull out their paper records and check. Finally, they realized their mistake, and informed me that my NCD IS in fact 40%, and I do not need to pay extra. That's all. No apologies for threatening customer when they made a mistake. I asked where I could lodge a complaint, and they replied they'll retrieve more records before getting back to me. Today, they finally called and said that on their quotation to me, my stated last insurer was AIG. I reminded them that it was simply a quotation, and at that time, I couldn't recall who was my last insurer. When I signed the insurance contract and made payment, I had provided my latest insurance contract. Shouldn't they make decisions based on that? Seems to me that Chartis didn't bother to check before shooting mails to customers demanding extra payment. As I was driving, I requested for the CSO to call me back later, and she replied there's nothing else they can do on their side. Wow. Not even an apology all the way. I'm shocked at the bo-chap attitude of this company, at how they do not bother to check records, and simply threaten to change contracts based on their outdated records. I cannot imagine what will happen if someone claims against me and I need to rely on them to fight for my case. Anyway, I'm prepared to switch insurers at the earliest possible opportunity. Andrefoo Neutral Newbie June 23, 2010 Share June 23, 2010 i actually contemplated aviva, but it was still more expensive compared to if I were to go through my broker. Saved myself another $140 although it was with another company. BTW, the terms of the broker sourced insurance was actually more comprehensive and the excess was also lower. So its not true that there are no cheaper quotes. Use aviva as a guide to see whether you can get anything cheaper. BTW, i jus renewed my insurance and road tax yesterday. Kb27 Supersonic June 24, 2010 Share June 24, 2010 I shopped for insurance by going for the cheapest or near cheapest. Aviva may claim to cut off middleman, another may give you COM 5% extra discount, but I looked at the bottomline and see who can give the cheapest after all discounts and gst added. So far, I've been lucky. I tried to drive safely and didn't get into ugly accident claims. To me, every insurance company will turn ugly once you start to claim. They look nice to you only when they are taking your money. So far, I have "good" experience with MSIG and now with insuremycar.com.sg..which means low premium and no claims. I've also been with AIG, AXA, RSA when their quote was lowest during that time. Aviva didn't quote me the lowest. NTUC didn't even return my request for quote. Every insurance company assess you differently and the car you drive. If they have bad experience and lotsa of claims with your type of car, they will mark up premium the following years. So always shop around.
Berncsp76 6th Gear June 24, 2010 Share June 24, 2010 yep correct bro. I even have brokers who claimed they can capture the lowest premium for me. But my usual is to ask for quote and double check against them. Wah some broker even had the audacity to charge additional $70-$300 for the premiums as compared to the same insurance company they given me, which I assume is their additional commission (they had another cut from the insurance company liaoz). This type already in my blacklist book...knn somemore is my ex-colleague...
Sbtyong 1st Gear June 24, 2010 Share June 24, 2010 My Aviva Excess is $1000. I think is on the high side, as most other company Excess is around $600. But Aviva gave me the best quote. Question is - Is Excess an important factor when selecting Car Insurance?
