They just launched an online application thing to cut out the agent commission. But don't know how much you save though.

Aviva launches online car insurance product

By TEH SHI NING

AVIVA is re-entering Asia's general insurance market with the launch of a direct online car insurance product in Singapore.

MR MACHELL

Aviva's entry into Singapore is the first step in its plan to penetrate Asia's general insurance market

Breaking into the motor insurance market here with premiums it claims are 7 per cent cheaper than competitors', Aviva also plans to roll out home and travel insurance products in two to three months. --

It said it will be the first direct writer in the motor market and the first with an online sales model, challenging the traditional agency models of existing insurers.

Acknowledging that the motor insurance sector here has struggled with losses in recent years, Simon Machell, chief executive of Aviva Asia Pacific, said the new product will compete on price, thanks to cost savings from cutting out broker commissions and back office processes.

'We think the timing of the launch is right,' he said. 'Previously, Singapore consumers may not have been so price sensitive, but this is now changing.'

Aviva Singapore chief executive Simon Newman said people are becoming more price conscious with higher COE prices and insurance premiums.

Average motor insurance premiums here rose 21.5 per cent last year, according to the General Insurance Association, of which Aviva is the newest and 35th member.

GIA president Derek Teo said Aviva's new direct-to-customer offering will allow motorists to select product features for comparison with competing insurers' products.

Aviva's home and travel insurance products are expected to be launched online too.

Although new to Singapore, online insurance is established in Western markets. For instance, 60 per cent of motor insurance in the UK is bought online.

Mr Machell said: 'Our entry into Singapore is the first step in our plan to penetrate Asia's rapidly expanding general insurance market.'

This move comes five years after Aviva sold its non-life operations in Asia to Japan's Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance. Aviva's non-competition agreement with Mitsui Sumitomo, which was part of that deal, expired this year.

Aviva's move also follows Prudential's dramatic US$35.5 billion bid for AIG's Asian arm AIA last month, in what was the sector's largest ever takeover.

Hey anyone tried aviva car insurance?

They seemed to be quite aggressive in their marketing campaign

I tried getting quotes from Aviva compared to all the others.

After discount, I got between 1.1-1.3k from the others.

For Aviva, around 900. Sounds good?

Not really. My make and model (Estima Hybrid) is not on the list.

They suggest I use the nearest one (Estima Aeras 2.4L), which is what I used to get the quote.

Do you think this is a safe bet? I don't think so. Such a waste.

How can they only have 1 Estima model when there are at least 5 distinct ones around?

Yet for some other makes, they have a whole list of cars I have never heard of.

Some insurers prefer certain car models. I was shopping recently, lowest is Aviva @ $580, highest is Income @ $1800. Most fall between $650 and $1000. Previously was with MSIG cos it was the lowest (Aviva was higher then). Aviva is not the cheapest for all makes and models.

bought a 2nd hand Aug 06 Volvo S40 a week ago. Car dealer claimed the lowest quote was from Chartis (not sure if I spell it correctly) at $1140.

I have never heard of this company but anyway signed up cos too lazy to look around. I was shocked to find out that the excess is at $1400 and no NCD protector. Did i overpaid? I have 50% NCD.
