Blackseal 1st Gear April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 With all the COE getting out of control in terms of runaway $$$$$....and common folks like us KPKB every month with the record COE results....do u think we should have a balloting system whereby an owner buying his / her first car should for example pay S$10k. Second car S$ 20k, and third car S$30k. For the super rich...anything above 3rd car should be 50k and above. I think part of the reason why COE prices also going out of control, is due to the fact that some wealthy families have 4, 5 or 6 cars in their household....u know the typical Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and a Lambo or Ferrari ? I think they are taking up quite a fair bit of COE's alloted to the general public....hence I feel the above suggestion should be a fair way to deal with such disparity in car ownership till date. What do u think ? Suggestions pls.. ↡ Advertisement

Kezg1 5th Gear April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 use the HDB balloting method I guess HDB is probably going for the bidding system to the highest bidder in the future...for hot estate.
Lufu 1st Gear April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 I guess HDB is probably going for the bidding system to the highest bidder in the future...for hot estate. Looking at the "successes and revenues" LTA had, time for HDB to follow suite....
TandemAssassin 1st Gear April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 I am not rich but why can't the rich have more cars? We are not a communist state and cars are not necessities so what justifies the imposition of such a system? Unless you are saying that cars are an important necessity such that we have a right to own/drive cars? For those who need it in their line of work, shouldn't the company pay for or subsidize the car if it is really needed and their pay is insufficient to own a car? Anyway, in a free market, those companies who are not willing to pay on behalf of such employees will find themselves with no employees in that job once cars become too unaffordable. Help1 1st Gear April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 I guess HDB is probably going for the bidding system to the highest bidder in the future...for hot estate. well, they may do that to main con who build the flats n infra around the estate by awarding the tender to whoever they bid the highest. if HDB going to use the bidding system to the highest bidder (i.e. hdb flat buyer) i can tell u there will be street protest and the MIW will have to step down. Tonyhawk 1st Gear April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 i agree with tandemassasin. a car is not a necessity, like it or not. the problem is the redistribution of the taxed income. COE income or income from other road related taxes should be used to improve/subsidise public transport. And no, public transport should not be owned by private companies. personally, let COE rise. public transport being fully funded by COE. i.e. FREE. Tonyhawk 1st Gear April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 also, a balloted system will create more uncertainty. just look at HDB, creating wealth for random individuals who got the "high floor good view, prime location" units.

Let the rich buy the cars (they don't feel the pinch of high COE), use the taxes to fund what is needed - public transport. LTA can nationalize the public transport companies, pay drivers an equitable wage, keep it as a job for SG citizens only (like taxi) and offset operating losses with the money collected from COE, ERP and traffic fines. The only side effect is that some sub-contractors will probably fold cause they depend the immense amount of road works that LTA undertakes and car lovers who are not rich will the government. Help1 1st Gear April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 (edited) Nationalised...oh PLEASE...the government is trying to privatise the Public Utilities (i think Gas/Electricity), Public Housing, Media....such a small market and yet they still want to create competition, obviously trying to kill off each other Edited April 8, 2010 by Help1

LTA can easily contract the work to the lowest bidder, who is willing to do the work i.e. supply drivers, maintenance staff, at the lowest price. that is the real free market, not this half-baked approach. As for the bus services, its not rocket science to run a bus company, please. quit kidding us. its ridiculous to think bus operators have such huge barriers of entry erected.
