I wanted to ask if there is a software for PC that can access the iPhone like a USB thumbdrive.... without the need for iTunes at all. I just got a 16GB 3GS and lots of empty diskspace.

Ehh... Just plug in the USB cable, a window will prompt to open the iphone as a thumbdrive. No meh? that's what I remember. Can't try now coz office disable external storage on USB.

You can use as thumbdrive, but you cannot see the files and software inside, nor can u add music by just copying in.

Nope, this won't work and never has it worked this way. AFAIK, my iPod Nano 1st gen can. (Not sure about other iPods). For those that is not jailbroken, usually, it's via wifi, not via USB cable.

another alternative is ifunbox.....

iFunBox, iPhoneBrowser, iPhoneExplorer all belong to the same category. They hook on to one of the DLL which is used by iTunes app to transfer file. It's a hacked method. I reverse engineered the iPhoneBrowser into a compilable source code too. That's why I know.... Condition is that you still must jailbreak the phone to be able to access all the directories.
