GM will have brake override on every automatic transmission

If there's a silver lining in the rash of unintended acceleration claims that have popped up against Toyota as of late, it's that manufacturers from around the world are beginning to think about incorporating brake override systems in their products. General Motors has just announced that all of its vehicles with automatic transmissions and electronic throttle control will boast an "enhanced smart pedal" by 2012.

Essentially, the unit will reduce engine power in the event that both the accelerator and brake pedals are depressed simultaneously.

Damn! No more left foot braking.

true...but on the bright side, you don't need to release the accelerator to brake..

pressing both simulteanously will result in reduced throttle and thus better braking.. [laugh]

This is not a silver bullet for some so-called SUA cases.

Why? If a ku-ku driver wrongly slam on the accelerator thinking it was a brake, the vehicle will still takeoff.

Remember the lady in

?

Mind u, most, if not all, BMW are equipped with BOS.

The issue is not with the car's safety, but rather, the driver's inability to function in emergency situations.

If you're faced with a stuck accelerator... is it that -difficult- to shift into neutral?

..........

I wished someone in Singapore could invent a device that will inflate the driver's air bag every time the car detects the driver is switching lanes without indicating. That's an invention worth investing on, you know?

i think one of the issues faced with the lexus is that, the gear cannot be shifted to neutral at full throttle..

Then its a very dangerous gearbox problem, not just a stuck accelerator problem. [rolleyes]

the only reason i can think of having such system is to protect the engine from over-revving should the driver accidentally shift to neutral..but this will put the driver in more danger instead..Lexus/Toyota are like Malaysia..BOLEH!!!

There's already such a system in place to prevent over-revving. Its called a rev limiter.

Neutral Newbie

The problem with all these retarded features, is that they are there to save you when you do retarded things, which, if you do, you are probably to retarded to drive in the first place.
