Hainan Island Tour

anyone can confirm if our local hainanese chicken rice originated from hainan island?

The last I ask around when I was in haikou, the locals either don't know about this dish or haven't heard of it, sort of concluded that this dish was created in SG by hainanese but not from hainan island itself

From my faint understanding, my great grand-mum told me : Place chicken ( with chicken head  sitting up-right and leg tugged-inwards the plate ( to indicate as " wholesome " ) were only served during CNY, special occasion like offering to Heaven God & Ancestor for blessings.

During the Japanese occupied era, as Hainan island main occupation was mostly peasants, farmers or street-hawkers, not many ppl could afford chicken as meat, my guess were Communist China were more interested in building Shanghai, Beijing and the rest during the Japanese occupation, hence chicken rice or chicken food were not available, nor Hainanese invented C.R. The belief were migration took lace during the war, many took flight out of H.I to seek refuge in Malaya and Singapura.

I asked my late parent how come we served rice make into a ball shaped like ' Ping Pong ' her reply were: " There is no time to scoop rice into rice bowl as plate are made of tin plate so everybody chipped in by using hands to press into a ball shaped ( dependent of one hand sizes ) and quickly placed onto a big tin plate for sharing . . . tuck in whatever food were placed on table.

Even a boiling pot of kopi-O or Tea can be shared among 10 peoples inside a small s/storey house 7 chatted till midnight talking about their old days.

When my late parent visited H.I in late 85/90s era, he said: " There isn't any Hainanese chicly rice available " only chap chye and stewed pork available, the men were lazy, sleeping and gambling, beating their wifey often after drinking chinese cheap wines. I can imagine how bad the economy over there . . . [shakehead]

Only the women folks work round the paddy fields or run day to day errands. When my parent landed here in Singapura, they saw the opportunity that foods were readily available, My dad doubled up as asst. cook in British Army Cookhouse canteen and mum as kitchen helper cum washer.

I would NOT say Chicky rice were founded here nor Hainan Island, more or less each has there own version, bt one thing was the chilli sauce make its better due to the different cultural and taste here by many dialects group, - Sweet & Sour by Teochew, Spicy and steam version by Cantonese, plus Niang Tou Hu sauces by Hakka and Hockchia dialect, so I gather Hanianese added in garlic into the chilli-sauce / Added chicken stock into steaming rice- flavourful aroma.  [:p]

Voila, Here is Sp Hainanese Rice, Last month I tried for the 1st time @ Marina Mandarin Famous Hainanese Rice @27.00/++- Verdict, Meat was tender and Juicy, The steam rice was sightly flavourful, a close shave of BoonTong Kee's steam rice- As a True Singapore Hainanese man, If a chef can prepare a simple dish of rice into perfection, an indulgence i can only say, up to my standard and expectation, the meat, soup, chilli, ginger and sweet sauce plus garnishes are nothing.

Ya lor, good point about the chilli sauce

I tried the chicken rice there but not as nice as sg one, and their chilli is very different from ours

Their rice is also different, coz they use the short grain rice while we use thai rice

Twincharged

Now the economy is much better.. You can tell by the food wastage everywhere...

There is this pitstop called HuangZhu or yellow bamboo... Between Haikou and Qionghai ...the serving of food there is unbelievable!! S$50 and the 4' round table is full!

But things will contrast vastly when you get closer to the populated areas.

OIC.

I think have.   My ex colleague who went to Hainan island and work for few years told me have.  But their version and ours are different like what Ysc3  mentioned.

Jman888 and uncle2 - you both hainanese?

Who else is Hainanese?  Very comfort to find so many Hainanese  here.  We are the minority dialect group in Singapore.

Visit or stay at NanShan Hotel for one night at Sanya and see the 180m high Kuan In statue, Shaolin Temple (South) and also 13 Post of Goddess of Mercy Temple (No photography inside, very strict).

NanShan Hotel is a vegetarian hotel.

coz i went nanshan hotel twice and both times i ate meat.

my first trip, the guide gave me his guide meal coupon and i went to the staff canteen below the visitor tuckshop for my lunch. of course there is meat there ...the guide told em "if don't eat meat, how to work?" LOL !!

my second trip, our meals were at the restaurant on top of the reception office. same thing when the rest of my family and relatives were having vege dinner inside, me and my cousin and nephews requested for non-veg meal at another table.

bro ... hainan is damn big for an island ... not like SG, only 50km ...

so where is you dad going actually ? group tour ? then most likely will be planned by the tour company.

if DIY, the transport will set you back by alot just like any other DIY trips.

yup ... weather is getting colder right now and its the rainy season ... if heading to the suburbans during rain, don't be surprised to see flood water to to knee height !

Thanks, bro, and also to @picnic06-biante15's suggestion too.

Ended up my father is joining a tour group of about 40 pax, so the itinerary should be fixed, and i shouldn't need to worry in the first place. This was not clear beforehand so i kancheong and started asking.

He went to Xinhui (in Guangdong) last week for 5 days on his own, and only just came back on Fri, then yesterday took 5.30 am flight to Hainan. He only signed up for this Hainan trip 2 weeks ago, when someone pulled out and a friend of his, jio'ed him to go along.

And he couldn't find his passport initially on Mon afternoon/evening, when he was packing, then panicked... Even suspected left at DFS counter after buying some beer on Fri, and was thinking of going there to look... before he finally found it lying in a corner on the third try!

I was busy calling changi to ask for help to check, when he finally found it around dinner time... si bey drama...
