a 4 pot with no balancer shaft ?

Or 4 pot engine with balancer shaft as smooth as a V6 ?

Would like to hear from bros and sisters who've compared both and would like to hear your personal experience.

Thanks in advance [:)]

4 potter is unbalanced by nature, thus its not smooth. V6 is also not exactly smooth.

If you really want a smooth engine, the best choice is inline 6. a 4 pot with a balancer shaft is as smooth as inline 6.

my c-class has two counter balancing rotating shafts i believe. when idling you cant feel the vibration at all.

so yes its as smooth as inline 6

4-pot with balancer shafts idle as smooth as V6 engines with a single balancer shaft, or an IL-6 without any balancer shaft.

Only problem is, such balanced 4-pot engines are few and far to come by, only because they are more expensive to manufacture and 4-pots are normally spec'd for entry-level models.

There are exceptions, of course, e.g. in the luxury marques.

Of late, AFAIK, only Merc 4-pot SC engines have the Lanchester counter-rotating balancer shafts (CRBS).

Merc Lanchester Balancer Shafts

The last Audi 1.6 NA engine (not the current FSI type) has also got CRBS. My wife is still driving this previous model A3. It idles as smooth as silk, even after 4 years.

Unforturnately for most of the 4-pot Jap, Kor, Conti engines do not come with CRBS.

yep thats why sometimes its hard to tell if the engine is on.

i got the shock of my life when i sat in a 520. the vibration was like sitting in a bus.

I don't quite believe the article. What kind of 4-pot weighs only 16kg? made of paper? maybe, but to sustain a CR of 10:1??

All that will change this summer, when a new range of state-of-the-art all-alloy, supercharged, dohc four-valve fours comes on stream. The new engine tips the scales at just over 35 lb (16 kg), and is almost 10% lighter than its predecessor, despite the addition of many new features.

(edited)

I have deleted my balancing shaft, chain and plugged up the oil hole. Slight vibration at idle but advantage outweighs discomfort.

Balancing counter-rotating shafts made of plastic resin. Cancels out the vibration resonance for my engine design.

Result in more power to the wheels, faster throttle response and less friction for the crankshaft when cutting through the oil bath. Plus you get to add almost 1 quart more oil which in my opinion is a good thing.

Depending on your engine design, you can liberate up to 15hp more at crank.

If you want comfort, then stick to stock.

Its because of the balancer shafts.

Oh this W16 is the best around,it 'drinks' 1L of petrol per KM.

Actually tried my fren's 320 with the 4 pot....the NVH is ok...and the sound is quite sporty for a 4 pot....think the one you tried may have some engine mounting issues...

I think u are referring to the Veyron doing top speed run....but then again...it's small change to the owner....nothing but the best...price not an issue at all...
