Hi all,

When on road trip to the North, what sort of hotel categorary would you pick?

Would you go for 5 stars hotel for a smaller room or a super Deluxe in a 3 stars hotel?

Also, is swimming pool an important criteria when choosing your hotel? Most of the tme, I felt that we might not be using those facilities like swimming pool, gym, library and etc. These are probably part of the hotel rates that we're paying. In Malaysia, some of those 4 stars/5 stars hotels/resorts look like 3 stars hotels/resorts.

I've the thought of using more of those boutique hotel or even those highly rated 3 stars hotel that don't come with swimming pool.

What do you think?

Thank you very much.

Regards,

Hi & good day !!

For me,

3 stars or 5 stars, swimming pool, other facilities does not matter much.

I am very budget conscious, so the value for money factor is my main criteria.

I use the hotel for resting at night, so the room conditions have to be reasonable and clean.

Carpark conditions/security is important.

So example when I drive to Genting, I stay at First World standard/deluxe room. If promo using Genting Points, then Resort or Highlands Hotels.

Usually the higher the rating the higher perceived level of safetiness and security. Smaller hotels may not have sheltered carparks and you have to park infront of their main entrances.

Be warned though.

The MY hotels tend to self-rate themselves.

So most of the hotels with the right ratings are those with the big name chains.

I think AAS and AAM should rate these hotels since most of the people going to them are the drivers.

Much like the RACV in Australia. RACV started as a motoring enthusiast club. Then later they grew big and did a lot for members. This included ratings for motels, hotels, caravan parks and camping parks.

Maybe MCF can grow to become like RACV!

"xxxx Hotel, Cherating, Malaysia, MCF member rating of 3*"

Some history on RACV

RACV is proud of its rich history which began in December 1903 when the Club was formed at Melbourne’s Port Phillip Club Hotel.

Initially established as a motorists’ social club, RACV encouraged the development of motoring and protected the rights of motorists.

We first provided social club facilities to members in 1904 and today we are proud to have a five-star City Club, a country club at Healesville and five resorts.

Our icon is our highly valued emergency roadside assistance, first introduced in 1924. We have provided tourism advice since 1912 and insurance services since 1915.

Our commitment to the community has never faded, providing transport during the war years and still today on ANZAC day, through our community programs and the RACV Community Foundation.

Today RACV is a diverse membership organisation with 1.9 million members. What a resounding tribute to the founding members!

The idea is not to organize excursions. The idea is to empower the motorist to go for his own excursions and tours.

I usually go for small boutique hotels. Cos when i go holiday i don't like squeezing with people.

In small hotels, the breakfast area, gym, sauna, pool, everywhere has less people. Really get to relax. The staff to guest ratio is also higher. Like the Bali one i stayed in recently, there were 7 staff and just 13 guests.

And i also feel safer being in a small hotel in this region as those big and busy brandname hotels are more possible bombing targets.

For me I dont consider how many stars.

I prefer a place which has safe parking( parking in front is Ok as long as there is some security around during the night), clean & comfortable rooms which r also safe, near-by food stalls & some shopping & reasonable rates & easily accessible by car.

Those chalet style also can as long as got the above.

Plus points wil b 24 hr room service, in house restaurant with decent meals.

When I go on road trips, the hotel room is just a place to keep my bags & a place to sleep & freshen up during the trip. No need too much luxury.

I go with hotel reviews rather than ratings.

In addition to the self rated bits (which arent wrong, just that the facilities dont tally with the quality in MY [:p]) Don't know if you know this but these ratings are facility based. So a 3 star may be better than a 5 star in terms of cleanliness, quality of fixtures and fittings etc, but gets a 3 star as it doesnt have a business center, swimming pool or gym, etc.
