Why must change brake pads

My car is nearly 3 yrs 7 mths and have covered 115k. My car is serviced by agent from day 1 and they never said I need to change brake pads. Is there a time limit to change?

My last servicing was early Jan. They tested my battery and the result was bad (something like 64%???) and was told to change. Till date I have not changed and nothing happened though there is sign that starting was not that strong as before. How long more can I tong?

For the brake pads, so long if you do not wear it till the pad metal is grinding against your discs, then no need to change.

For battery, in SG can use until flat then call AA to replace :P

For batter I can afford till it goes flat cause I member of AA. For brake pads I wonder why still no need to change at 110k. My previous cars at most 70k must change.

They never say doesn't mean they never change. Maybe change brake pad is included in the service package so they just changed it without letting u know since u already paid for it?

of course must change brake pads!

if they wear out, you'll have to step harder to brake and your car will have a longer braking distance, which is very dangerous..

My car just changed pads at abt 70K km. Usually after 3-4 years I wil need to change.

Yours 110K km is very long time.

Like what nolisence mentioned, I also had an accident cos my pads used for too long & they glazed over & had no grip. I hit the back of a new Merc cos of that. Now even pads still not worn down, I wil change if I feel the grip not so good anymore.

If you call AA to replace battery, their battery is quite expensive.

Change service manual for interval to change brake pad (presumably you are using stock/OEM ones).

well, for brake pads. the driver driving pattern play a part as well. Saw some driver floor their acc n brake hard stop behind the white line coz sgp traffic lights is as if FOC n this kind of driver might need to change their brake pads more often. So TS, r u this kind of driver???? ^_^

your driving pattern is good thus, lesser usage of brake pads.

if you see no problem in braking and no "eee" sound, you can continue with them.

as for battery, even though 64% is more than half of the battery's life span, to start a cold engine, heardsay must be >60%.

your mechanic might be right unless you want to wait till some day the battery just disappoint you. =p

AA quoted me $110 to $130 depending on what I choose.

I service at TCM and they recommended me to change something regarding air-con parts costing $200+ and something under the suspension costing $200+ and the battery but never said I need to change my stock brake pad. I did nothing about all the recommendations.

Do the front brake pads wear out faster than the rear ones?

What are the symptoms of a failing/warped rotor?

=============

Mine disc for front & back but the front already changed but back still got plenty left.

Warped rotor u wil feel uneven braking when stopping but rotors hardly warp.

Dont listen to those mech tell u must skim or change discs. They BS alot.

Sometimes just some dirt on the pads or discs. Just use if its not too serious. If warped, u wil feel the brakes binding as u slow down.

So far I driving for 30 years & never had to skim or change discs due to warping.

Only if car is very old or u really suay & jam brakes a lot, then maybe wil warp abit. Discs r very durable.

After warranty, WS like to ask u to change this & that.

Most of the time is not necessary. They just [knife] you.

For AC, just go Markcool. No BS & no hustle. See Ah Huat. He wil diagnose & recommend what is necessary.

Sometimes I want to service AC, he check & tell me its still OK. Just use only. 1 of the better(honest) ac places in SG.

isit necessary to change the brake pad if its squeaking? what causes this squeak?

mine was squeaking quite badly but the braking performance is still there.... went for servicing and the noise no longer there....

Depending on the weight of the car, how much weight you are carrying, the way you drive and brakes, your front brake pads will wear usually in half the time compared to the rear. For most people, front brake pads are replaced within 80-100K Km which will take most drivers in SG abt 3-4 years by which time your brake pads itself are probably not grippy anyway.

Not replacing your brake pads when they need to be replace will mean you will not be able to stop your car within its designed performance. Metal rivets holding up the brake materials to the pad housing will come into contact with your brake disc and make deep grooves damaging the discs eventually. Replacing your brake pads when they are worn is a lot cheaper than having to replace the set of brake discs, not to mention the hassle and expense of a collision should your vehicle hit another vehicle or people.

Likewise, if your car battery is as old as your car it is overdue for a replacement. A bad battery will load your alternator unnecessarily causing wear and tear to the alternator and higher fuel consumption due to the alternator having to constantly charge your battery which is not able to hold a proper charge. AAS aside from charging more batteries than the regular tyre and battery shops in your neighbourhood will also take at least an hour to get to your destination. If you are outside and stranded on the side of the road, do consider the inconvenience and danger you are posing to yourself and others by your presence with your stranded car while other cars zip along nearby at high speed.

All the above aside, pls consider that the average vehicle is more than a ton in weight. Bigger cars weigh up to as much as 2 to 2.5 tonnes. Multiply that mass by the average speed that people drive their cars, I feel there should be a social responsibility on our side to ensure we maintain our vehicles properly and change worn out parts when advised. Yes the workshop could be dishonest here and there but one should also consider the consequence of injury to oneself or worse, innocent parties if such advices are ignored. I have two friends who lost control of their cars which resulted in total loss of the cars due to the tyres on these cars being bald or close to bald.

So I think you can get a second opinion if you wish but once the parts are confirmed worn or in bad shape pls do have them replaced soonest possible so that you do not put yourself and your loved ones at risk.
