170 arrests in massive Geylang crackdown

SOME 170 people were arrested Saturday morning in a massive 14-hour operation at Geylang, led by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The operation involved over 200 officers from the Home Team and kicked off Friday afternoon, said the Singapore Police Force in a statement.

The people were caught for a host of criminal offences including illegal gambling activities, secret society involvement, possession of an offensive weapon, immigration offences, peddling contraband cigarettes, vice-related activities, trafficking, possession and consumption of controlled drugs.

what is the purpose?

Geylang is a red-light district and will always be...because it was meant and created to be that way.

So this whole exercise seems to be just creating some jobs for the police to do.

1 month later it will be back to square one and then what? another exercise?

Waste of time and taxpayer's money

Its better to clear them.Drugs, illegal immigrants, overstayer, secret society involvements?Ever wonder what are the consequences if just leave it like that? What happen if your love ones are involve into these activities? Then u will start to blame government for not clearing them? Then singapore will not be as safe as before.Anyway your tax are channelled into 10000000000 of many other things.why only 1 out of 10000000000 are being said waste of taxpayer?I dont find it a big deal.Raids are conducted regurlarly as far as i know, only this one is a major one, which also involve SAF MP as well to help out.Good usage of taxpayer's money. If want to clear them, then just make prostitution illegal in Geylang. That would clear it once and for all.

For what do all this clearing when Geylang is still a legal place for prostitution? For sure a place like this will have an overspill of other illegal activities.

If want to kill a tree, make sure you pull out the roots as well. Don't just cut the leaves and branches because it will just grow back. And then cut again..for what? Isn't that waste of time and money? Might as well just pull out the roots.

i think its impossible to make prostitution illegal. to me, i think its correct to mark out certain area as red light district. this way the activities will be kept within that area and anything tt spill out from that area can be dealt w severely bcos there is a legalise way to do it, but they chose the illegal way. i think the op is targetted at those standing along the streets, as they are illegal n v highly, infected w HIV. and of cos the other vices is their target too. imagine a place without legal ways for horny man to ease themselves.. maybe the rape cases will increase? hmmm
