Flip Key

Just did a flip key for my wife's car. You can get the same flip case for around S$40 on ebay (vs S$98 for Number 1 link) but u will need someone to cut it for you. Some authorised dealers will cut the key for you for free but others will not touch aftermarket product. If u bought it off ebay, get it cut locally and can't open your door you are flushing S$40 down the drain. Anyway on to the flip key design ... the orientation of the key is different from the OEM key so you may find it awkward turning to start your car. The flip key design I chose had 2 screws, on top and another bottom in the middle of the flip case. Excessive turning caused the ends of the flip key side to flex and open slightly so I opened up the case and try to realign and tightened the case. The flip key swinging motion comes from a spring inside which is coiled up held in place by a little piece of metal linked to the spring, placed between the plastic groove. Not a very sturdy construction. No worries about the flip key coming loose as it is usually a one-piece design connected to the flip ledge. However there are some flip designs which uses your original key and are held in part by a piece of metal. Personally I like it, save for the awkward turning position. Its a smaller form factor and prevents scratching of your stuff in your pocket.

You can try the Bukit merah central NTUC (the former HDB office). Front of the NTUC there is this push cart key maker, just beside the POSB Atm. I did saw some casing on the flip key type. I reckon shouldn't be ex as is a push cart rather than a shop front.

hi folks,

anyone duplicated your stock remote to a flip key type? Sample picture can be found here http://www.tradekey.com/selloffer_view/id/2449248.htm

I hope the flip key is durable as I am planning to keep my ride for another few years. One of my 2 stock remotes is dead and the other is intermittent. So thinking of duplicating it before it dies completely. Heard it can be troublesome to duplicate the remote if it is not working already.

Anyway, below are some of the shops offering flip keys.

1) Soxxi - http://www.autokey.sg/index.php

2) Velocikey - http://www.velocikey.webs.com/

3) Sglocksmith - www.sglocksmith.com/

4) Newton - www.newtonautokeys.com/

those with experience please advise me which one you prefer to get the flip key done.

thanks!

I did mine @ N****n in Jun 09, VW replica flipkey to replace Vios stock remote (3 buttons).

Paid SGD 60 back then. Solid construction. Only complain is that the paint on the buttons came off after 1 yr :( other wise no complain. Batt also lasted more than 1 yr with daily usage.

S***i is the most ex, had ask them for quotes before. @ least 50 pct more than average.

There is a shop at Sin Ming that does it for like $40... Its the VW look alike flip key..

I suggest getting your key cut from Sxxxxi then bring down to this shop to do, should be cheaper, $30... The person key cutting skills workmanship is quite bad so I suggest getting a key cut from somewhere else, then ask the guy to use the duplicate key instead of asking them to cut.. cos 2 of my remotes done by them, one have difficulty starting car engine, have to insert few times and the other cannot open door... So have to get them to file, very troublesome...

But keys cut by Sxxxxi is actually very good you know, i done 2 with them already... very good workmanship :)

Just a quick check-in with your guys.

I went to one of the shops listed on this thread today.

The guy quoted me $80 to change my key to a flip key type.

He said no need to cut new key, he can transfer the old key over.

IS This possible ?

Also, he said I needed to bring all my car keys (total I have 2 keys) and re-program all the keys at the same time.

Does this make any sense ?

I tried to duplicate a flipkey a few years back. None of the shops outside, including those mentioned here can duplicate my immoblizer key and remote lock/unlock. Called up authorised dealer and they quoted me $350 to duplicate the remote and flip key.

That is correct... if your car key has the immoblizer difficult to duplicate

Sorry for digging old post. As I used Google to search for 'car key remote duplicate' which brings me to this thread.

Just to sic, I just made a new flip key with 3 buttons function. Initially I asked around and some gives ridiculous quotes like $3XX.

In the end settled with Caeg Specialist. Cost me only $1XX.

I personally think flip key quite troublesome to flip it out and flip it in. Unless your car is keyless entry. Lol.

With keyless entry type of car... the day you need the physical key is when you will want a flip key  [sweatdrop]

My fob has the key hidden under the back cover...
