Ivan96935sg Neutral Newbie January 15, 2010 Share January 15, 2010 Calling all maths genius for help........to solve the following qns:- Tried to solve but then apparently my maths had returned a huge bulk to my former teachers. There were 2 identical flight of steps. For the 1st flight of steps, Jim walked up some steps and ran 7 steps in 70s. For the 2nd flight of steps, he walked up some steps and ran 15 steps in 46s. How long did Jim take to walk up both flight of steps? (Ans: 182s). ↡ Advertisement Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Simplesilver 1st Gear January 15, 2010 Share January 15, 2010 Do you mean how long was his journey to get to the top of the stairs? or you mean, how long will he take if he walk up the stairs and not run? Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Ahleon Neutral Newbie January 15, 2010 Share January 15, 2010 (edited) x=walk y=run x+7y = 70 ---(1) x+15y = 46 ---(2) (1)x15 -> 15x + 105y = 1050 ---(3) (2)x7 -> 7x + 105y = 322 ---(4) (3)-(4) -> 8x = 728 therefore x = 91s, if he walk up the 2 flight of stairs he will use 91s x 2 which is 182s Edited January 15, 2010 by Ahleon Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

(Ans: 182s). the difference of 1st and 2nd: 70-46 = 24s 2nd step run more step: 15-7=8 so every step run/walk difference is 24/8=3s so for 1st flight of step, if all walk need 70+7*3 = 91s for 2nd flight of step, if all walk need 46 + 15*3 = 91s Total = 91*2 = 182 s am I math genius? So if he walk 7 steps instead of running, he took 3s x 7 = 21s more So total for 1st flight of stairs is 70s +21s =91s so 2 flight = 2 x 91s = 182s Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

There were 2 identical flight of steps. For the 1st flight of steps, Jim walked up some steps and ran 7 steps in a total of 70s. For the 2nd flight of steps, he walked up some steps and ran 15 steps in a total of 46s. How long did Jim take to walk up both flight of steps? (Ans: 182s). Ivan96935sg Neutral Newbie January 15, 2010 Author Share January 15, 2010 Thanks so much for the solution. Algebra method seems easier to understand but then my kid have not really gone into algebra yet. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Christan Turbocharged January 15, 2010 Share January 15, 2010 Based on the above solution, so X=91 and Y=-3. So if assuming ran 32 steps, the time taken will be -5s. So this is a mathematical Q but with an illogical outcome. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Sucker Clutched January 15, 2010 Share January 15, 2010 (edited) U are right... a=number of total steps, y=walking steps per second and x=running steps per seconds For alegbra, Equation1 [a-7]/y+7/x=70 Equation2 [a-15]/y+15/x=46 The question and answer are not logically correct....The total time taken is 70s+46s=116s and the answer is for walking step is 182s more than total time taken... Based on the above solution, so X=91 and Y=-3. So if assuming ran 32 steps, the time taken will be -5s. So this is a mathematical Q but with an illogical outcome. So this is a mathematical Q but with an illogical outcome. if u looking at the correct solution, Y=-3 is the time save on running compare to walking. that means 3sec difference. so if he ran 32 steps, he would have save 96secs compare to walking.
